SO my daughter had a checkup today w/ a new dr. She told us she has an Labial Adhesion. Never heard of it, so i was a little shocked. She prescribed a cream, an estrogen cream. I didn't think of anything of it when I was there. I get home and of course get on the internet to do research...I am kind of freak out by what some people are saying about the cream, side effects etc.. anyone else have this diagnosis in their young daughter and did you use the cream? any other ways to treat it? natural remedies??

What can I do next?

My daughter had this too when she was about a year old. I used the estrogen cream. My dr said to just use the tiniest amount, the size of a piece of rice, and it opened up in a week's time. I was worried about side effects, like her growing breasts and facial hair since I read about that online, but she had absolutely no side effects. It worked so well. I was also told the adhesion would probably go away on its own, but while it was adhered there was a greater chance of her getting a UTI, so that's why I decided to give the cream a try.
Good luck to you with whatever you decide!

My daughter also had this. We tried the cream for a while and it didn't work. We finally had it opened up. I think we saw a pediatric urologist and they put this patch thing on her to numb the area and then the dr. just snipped it open. I was freaking out about the whole thing too, but it really wasn't a big deal in our case. And I haven't seen any evidence of it closing back up either (she is almost 3 now).

My daughter is 22 months.. our first pediatrician said "I'm surprised she can even pee but as long as it isn't bothering her - let's leave it alone and she should out grow it".

We moved when she was 10 months old, and our new pediatrician said that we could just let it be for now and she'll out grow it.

I see a Certified Nurse Practicianer, who I think tends to be a little less "medical" than an M.D. I'd get a second opinion.

Does it bother her? If it doesn't, I'd probably just let it be as well.

My daughter used the cream and some people may freak you out, but my daughter had absolutely no side effects from the cream.

We were told never to pull it apart. When your daughter has an estrogen surge (my doctor said some time between age 3-5) it will usually open up. She said if it didn't open up after age 5 then we would try the cream to get it to open. She said even if it didn't open up when she was little the estrogen surge of puberty will almost always open it. If it doesn't open then they will do a minor surgery (with anesthesia - not just pulling it apart) and cut it open, but that is more of a last resort when they are teenagers.

My daughter was diagnosed with this 2 weeks ago and they said she would eventually grow out of it. They didn't prescribe anything because they said we would have to keep vasaline on it all the time to keep it from closing back up if the cream worked (in other words it would be more trouble than it was worth) and that if she didn't have any other issues there was no reason to treat it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

A friend of mine has a 5 year old daughter that had the same problem recently. It was hurting her when she went potty and that was how their new pediatrician discovered it. They used the estrogen cream and within a month all was normal and now mom just has to apply vaseline to the area for a few months so that it stays that way. The doc said it is very common during the potty training years and then again in the early teenage years. If it is not hurting the child you can wait it out & most times the body's own hormones will take care of it. Also, my friend has not mentioned any negative side effects from the cream.

I had this when i was just under 2 (now 37). I vividly remember the pain during urination (i was potty trained at under a year) and I VIVIDLY remember the doctor using a cauterizing stick to separate. It was very painful!! I am just amazed that the doctors do nothing and it corrects itself...unbelieveable! I would lean towards doing nothing unless it bothers her, but keep a close eye on it so it doesnt get worse. Good Luck!

My daughter had it, her vagina was sealed shut. Our doctor did not prescribe the cream, he wasn't concerned about it, and it resolved itself by the time she was 3yo. It's nothing to worry about right now.

Wow! I'm currently in a little shock over one of your responses that said that they had to pull their daughter's adhesion apart. Ouch! This never occured to me and while I'm not sure I would try/ want this done to my daughter, it's certainly an approach to do more research on before just doing it.

My daughter currently has this. She is 3 1/2 and our Doctor doesn't recommend anything for this unless it's 50% closed. She does say to use vaseline if we want but that her hormones (the estrogen) will naturally fix it and yes, it's very common especially during the potty training years. If you want to get a 2nd opinion, e-mail me and I will be happy to refer you to our Doc. She is awesome.

As a side note, I would not use the estrogen cream either.

Hope this helps.
