Kitchen Appilances

Here is the story - our dishwasher is at the end of its life, so we need to replace. Our house and the appilances are 15yrs old, the appliances are black. I want to get a new dishwasher with a stainless finish and eventually convert the other appliances to stainless. But...everything else is working fine and we cant afford to change everything just so it matches. My question is two fold - first, it stainless still the most desired finish with new builds and remodels? And would it be too strange to get a stainless finish now for the dishwasher knowing that it could be a while before the other appilances need replaced? Anyone been through this? Thanks for any advice...my husband thinks we should replace with black because everything else is working okay. A complete kitchen remodel would not happen for over 5 years I think.

What can I do next?

My first appliance that went down was my dishwasher, went to stainless or the equivalent from black. . Second, the microwave went a couple yrs later, went to stainless. Cooktop next, black glass top with stainless rim. Only things left are refrigerator (9 yrs old) and built in double ovens (came with house ?).

It is best to look for something with a mix of stainless and black if you can find it.
I am very patient with my decorating. It will do you well to go for what you want in the end.

I think it is just personal choice. My personal favorite is white. All of my appliances are white and KitchenAid. My dishwasher is white on outside and stainless steel on inside.

I have had a stainless steel sink once and hated it. My daughter has stainless steel sink now as well as her other appliances and she is not crazy about eh stainless steel. She said she is constantly wiping down because they get fingerprints and shows every time she uses them.

You can certainly see if white is dirty. I have a white cast iron sink and I do clean it a lot to keep it sparkling white, just like I do my white stovetop. I wouldn't change my choices though.

I'm dreaming of a kitchen revamp as well.

Our appliances don't match. We get what works for the space we have. I don't think anyone has ever balked at the choices. Microwave is from the 80s, I think, with faux wood grain; stove is at least 70s with beige and black and the fridge is white. We have pretty precise space requirements, between windows, back doors, basement doors, etc. The dishwasher is whatever I happen to be wearing that day, ha!

Our sink, however, is stainless and I really wish we had a cast white enamel one. PITA, that sink, no matter how often I clean it.

I bought all black because "I" like them to be black. I don't like stainless. It's a fad. When you decide to sell do you really think your house won't sell if the appliances are a few years old and white or black or purple? I don't think so.

I really want to buy my own appliances. Truthfully, I don't like stainless and to me that would be a drawback in a kitchen.

Skip the stainless, skip the stainless, skip the stainless! We changed ours over a few years ago and I really regret it. They are a horrendous choice when you have kids in the house. Constantly a smudgy mess.

If you have black, stick with that. We had white, which hid everything, and I wish we'd just gone with white again.

We built this house 21 years ago with all stainless in the kitchen, we have spent the past 20 years figuring out how to replace it all, it is a cleaning nightmare.

Anyway I suppose you can reverse it but when the stove went we got black with stainless accents, the washer same, now we are waiting for the fridge to die.

I hate stainless, it's a pain in the a$$ to clean. But that's just my opinion. If you want to know what's popular now because you may be considering selling and are concerned about resale value, call some real estate agencies and ask them. They will know what's trending. If not, just get what you like. It's your house after all and it should be what you want it to be.

I had to replace my fridge in July. I have all white appliances. Stainless was the same price as white or black (at RC Wiley) and when I asked, the salesman said white and stainless are tied in popularity these days. He said people don't like the upkeep stainless requires- cleaning and it scratches easier. I ended up choosing white because it matched the other appliances.

Wouldn't matter to me if they match or not. Get what you like. When we bought our house beige fridge, almond/black stove, and white dishwasher. What we should have looked at was age - the stove is from prehistoric times (but not enough to be antique, just old). That said if I had a choice Stainless all the way. With the right cleaner easy peasy!

I put stainless everything in my last kitchen remodel. THIS time, I put panel overlays on everything. I just got sick of constantly trying to keep the stainless clean. I think it's overrated.

If all your appliances are black, I'd get the matching dishwasher. That way, until you DO remodel your kitchen, at least everything will look nice to YOU.

It seems to me that the only people who want and value stainless are the realtors and people who don't actually have it. Of all the folks I know who actually HAVE stainless, only a very, *very* few of them love it - most sort of like it, but hate the maintenance.

I would probably go with stainless, just because I like it. If the rest of your appliances are as old as the dishwasher, you may not be PLANNING to replace them for another 5 years, but it may be required on an earlier schedule than you would like.

Refrigerator efficiency has come a long way in 15 years, too.

I would get what I liked. ONE appliance that is different than the rest, but is still sort of generic (I think Stainless can match any other generic colors, i.e, black/white, but probably not almond). The saying "black goes with everything" in clothes, I almost feel like goes with stainless and appliances.
For me, it would really only be a problem if you had multiple colors going on (stainless dishwasher, white stove, black refrigerator... or something like that).

That said, our dishwasher is completely stainless. Our stove is a stainless front with a black control panel and black glass on top, our refrigerator is stainless with black handles, and the microwave is black and stainless also.

Interesting to me to see the different personal tastes. We had all white in our first house and I hated it. Talk about kids smudgy prints on everything. Ew. I hardly notice the smudges on our stainless.
We had a white sink in the rental we lived in while building this house. I had wanted a white ceramic sink until then. The amount of grossness you see in the bottom of a white sink daily sent me straight back to a stainless sink, too.

I'd get what's reliable. Once you hang enough magnets and coupons and kids' artwork on the fridge, you can't tell the finish anyway.

I think people love the look of stainless - until they spend their every waking moment wiping off the fingerprints! Same goes for the black finishes - very snazzy looking, but they show every smudge.

Beyond that, go for good repair records (try Consumer Reports) and energy savings. For example, a dishwasher that lets you air-dry the dishes rather than use the heat setting saves money. Same for refrigerators.

Personally, I think it's not necessary to have everything match unless you are planning to sell the house soon.

I like my stainless. I like seeing all the DIRT on the surfaces.....

I always buy with the future in mind, so if ou will be replacing the rest soon, buy a dishwasher that will likely match what you want in the future.

Stainless almost always has black accents so I think you could stay black and not worry about the future.

I have stainless and don't understand what everyone is complaining about. They occasionally get smudged, and a quick spray and wipe later look sparkling. I would recommend testing out the stainless surfaces. They have "fake stainless" which look like stainless but are finger print/smudge resistant. At the store when we were buying a fridge, I rubbed my fingers all over those doors and immediately nixed the ones where the smudges were prevalent. The fridge I ended up with - it is very difficult to see prints and smudges on.

It depends on the buyer, I think. I like black. My DH likes stainless. Nothing in our kitchen matches. I'm waiting for the fridge to die so I can replace it. I'd go with black, but that's my personal taste.

I bought Silver Mist. Looks sort of like stainless, but it is silver paint and is much easier to keep clean than stainless. I don't know if it is a desired finish, but it was for me. It has lots of black trim, so it still matches my black exhaust fan/microwave, When we bought our appliances it was the same situation, just the dishwasher had stopped working, but we found that if you bought fridge, stove and dishwasher as a package it was a lot cheaper than buying each item separately. So we got the package and sold the old fridge and stove.

We have stainless which we put in about 7 years ago. I understand that is on its way out, being replaced by white. I still like it - it's a little bit of a pain to take care of. Our fridge is "fake stainless" which is easier, but scratches.
