I love my Kindle. I looked at the Nook color and didn't like it at all. Since I would want my son to use it to read, I would get him the Kindle.

Also - Amazon announced in April that the Kindle will be able to read library e-books sometime this year. I do not know if this has already happened.

I have a Pan Digital Novel which is by Barnes and Noble (same as the Nook and so uses the same market). It's touchscreen and has WiFi, full internet, a built-in Dictionary, music player, photo viewer, video capabilities, alarm clock, games, and a calendar. It's Android powered as well so you can download apps. I call it a poor man's ipad. It's more expensive than a Kindle or Nook ($199 at Kohl's although I saw it recently on sale for $149 on Amazon). I love, love, love my Pan Digital.

If you can at all afford it I would do the ipad though. It is an e-reader, game player and so much more.

I got my husband the Kindle for Father's Day. He loves it because it's like a real book. It doesn't have a backlight like the Nook (this can strain your eyes). He can read magazines, newspapers, ebooks, books, blogs, download books from the library (coming later this year). The font sizes are good. Text to speach if you want it (on some books). He can read it in bright sunlight with no glare. He did his research knowing what he wanted. One of them will be the right fit for your son.

You can go on the internet with the Kindle but it's slow. It's not a browser.

Hi! My husband got my daughter and my self a nookcolor for a combined birthday gift and love it! It has the options of apps but you have to pay for them and even the free stuff they charge you a $1 fee and then return it a few days later so watch that. But I like the idea that everything is in color and I can go on the internet which I believe you can not do with the kindle. There are ways to get free items for it to if you know where to look. Good luck!!

My son and I both have Nook Color. We love it! My daughter has a Kindle...wishes she had a Nook. Honestly, I think they are very similar so I think you can't go wrong with either but I do like that if there is an issue, you can take it right into a Barnes and Noble and they can help you with it.

Love that your son loves to read!

I have a Kindle and my son has a Nook. I would say for what you are looking to use it for, I would go with the Nook. The Kindle is pretty basic (i have the older version though too) My sons does a lot more, but I just got the Kindle for books.

I have a Kindle and it is great for reading. For a teen, who will also want some game capability, I would go with the Nook. They are touch screen (Kindles are not) and you can access your email and such much easier. I have friends with the Nook and they love them. I don't want all the "extra" stuff in my "book", lol.... so I have kindle. Neither of them is very big, so transportability (is that a word?) is about the same. I think they both hold a charge pretty long, too.

I like the Nook better because you can do library books, which you can't with the Kindle.

My Mom has a Kindle, and LOVES it.
All her friends, have one too, now. After seeing hers.
She has had NO problems with it.

Or, an iPad is an alternative, Many apps for it and games. Free.
You can read books on it too.

I don't know anything about either, but was hinting that the kindle sounded interesting. My husband bought me the 64gig iPad2 for my birthday in March when it first came out. My dad's wife spent 5 minutes with it and wished she had this instead of the kindle that my dad just bought her!
