Unless you are looking for a private kindergarten that you will be paying for, you are not too late to start looking. If your son will be attending the public school system in your area, you just need to know which school's attendance boundary you are in for your local school district. You probably have a school in your neighborhood (or very close by). Call that school to confirm if that is the correct school for you based on your address and then find out when kindergarten registration is being held.

For private schools, the best way to determine where you would like your son to go is to call the school and arrange a visit. It is the only way you will know if you and your son will feel comfortable there. You can also ask about the cost of tuition so that you will know if it will fit your budget.

I know our school (public, Oak Park) starts K registration in the middle of February. But you are never too late for public school - they are required to take you if you live in the district and your child is the right age, no matter when you register. You should look into it now, though, because they probably have some open house and informational sessions. Just call the district you live in for information.

For private schools, you could try the listings in Chicago Parent: http://www.chicagoparent.com/topic/education.

You aren't late. Are you looking for private or public? For public schools you are typically assigned to a school in your district. The main office for your school district should be able to help you determine which one that is. Is he in preschool now? They may also have some information to help you.

My opinion: Montessori. Make sure it's accredited.
