My daughter will be 5 years and 11 months when she STARTS Kindergarden. I just don't think 1/2 day is going to make much of a difference. She would be going to Deep Creek Central School. She has been learning her letters now for 2 years at pre-k and is bored. I have checked out a couple private Kindergardens. Does anyone know of a great private school in Chesapeake? Any thoughts about Deep Creek Central?
Thanks, C.

I don't know about Deep Creek but my daughter went to Norfolk Highlands in Chesapeake last year. Her class had a teacher an assistant teacher and a high school student for 18 students they tested each student in the first few weeks of school and put them in a group for reading and math. The groups changed as the students progressed at their own rates. My daughter lived with her mom and step dad until the August before Kindergarten and had never been to pre school so she had just learned her ABCs and could count to 50. By the time she finished last year she was reading on a 1st grade level and adding on level.

My son attends half day kindergarten at a public school. They do much more than learn letters. They are preparing him for what is required of him when he begins 1st grade. He has learned how to sound out letters and is beginning to read and write. He is learning beginning math facts, basic science and has best friend that he talks about at least once a day. If you heard him talk about his day you would think he was in school longer than 4 hours. He loves school, every day he comes home he is excited about his day. I don't know what pre-k your daughter attends but maybe they just aren't doing enough to keep her attention. Virginia has awesome public schools it would be a shame to pay for something that the state is offering at no charge.

You might want to call Deep Creek Central and see if there kindergarden is half day or full day.. my son goes to Georgetown Primary in Chesapeake and he has full day kindergarden.

Hi, C.,
I am teacher with Chesapeake Public Schools but I don't work at Deep Creek Central. To my knowledge, Kindergarten is a lot more than just learning your ABC's. Most of the time teachers assume the children already know them by the time they get to kindergarten. School is competely different than when we went to school. The standards have been raised much higher. Anyways, Kindergarten is also about socialization and coping skills, that children need to learn. If they miss out on these lessons early, they isn't time once they get older to go back and teach it to them.

Personally, I am not sure whether 1/2 kindergarten is a waste of time in general, by the time the kids arrive it is time to go home but that is for now how Chesapeake has set up their kindergarten program. As for private school kindergartens, the only one I have heard about is Greenbriar Christian on Kempsville. I have no idea how much it costs but I am sure that it is a pretty penny and I also don't know if they ofer a full day or a 1/2 day. One thing to remember when considering private school is that the teachers DO NOT have to be state certified and therefore private schools do not have to adhere to hiring practices of the public schools.

Hope this helps!!!
K.
