Moving to the Killeen area soon. Am interested in putting my son in a program or play group. Now in VA, he is in a play group offered by a program here in the community that is just like preschool. They have art time and snack and free play, and circle time. He loves it. And it's FREE! I don't have to worry about mommy nights and having to participate in other special group activities,or a fee to be involved, when i just want my kid to learn and play with other kids. (no offense to those who need mommy time, with my family near by i will get that)
It is sponsored through the community library, i was hoping to find something in the same nature maybe through the library or community center? Any suggestions? Or maybe even special play areas with large play areas and playscapes where he can exert some energy playing. Thanks

What can I do next?

Hi M.! I live in Copperas Cove, just west of Fort Hood. Before my daughter started pre K, we used to go on Post to the bronco youth center on Wednesdays (I'm pretty sure), and they have a play group there in the mornings. It was a lot of fun, plus right outside they have a really cool playscape. I'm sure you could ask around for more details on that when you get here. My friend is in a play group that she found on cafe mom, and they have gone to do lots of fun stuff with her 2 year old. I'm sure with just a little looking you'll be able to find some of the play groups in this area. Good luck!

M.,
You can call the city of Killen or the City of Copperas Cove to get more info on what they offer. Also, I live in Copperas Cove and I know that the public library does story time and activities for small children once or twice a week. You can also call local elementary schools when you get here to see what they suggest since a lot of people with a kid in elementary have another on the way or at toddler stage.

I have been here 5 years...if you find something like that please tell me about it!!!

in the meantime..Fort Hood (which, considering where you are moving is where your hubby must be assigned) has day care provided on base. It is free to sign up for active duty right now and they offer free 16 hours per child per month care after that they charge on a sliding scale based on income...plus, if you volunteer you get 50 hours free per child per month.

Copperas Cove (the next city to the West) offers a free Pre-K program for children who are 3 and up if you are family members of active duty military (full day)or if you qualify for the free lunch program (half day)...

I hope that helped some.

The Killeen area has a ton of things to offer for military families and children. I have 3 kids, (8,6,and 2) The two oldest children are involved in Gymkix, (gymkix.com) They offer playgroups and tumbling classes. My youngest is in Kindermusik,(myacademyofarts.com) She has been doing that since she was 4 months old. The instructor is wonderful. The YMCA offers a lot and Killeen parks and rec do a lot with families too. I hope that helps.
