Kids Went from Good Eaters to Picky Eaters Overnight?

It seems like my 15 month old children went from good eaters to picky eaters overnight. For example, today, my son has barely eaten anything but a few beans and ritz crackers and my daugher has barely eaten anything but a bite or two of mac n' cheese, bananas and turkey meatballs. Any suggestions on some good foods to try? Any suggestions on getting them to eat? Or is this just a phase (one that is very unsettling to Mom)?

We just got back from our 15 mo appointment, and our ped said this was very normal. Over night my dd went from eating everthing to looking at the food and either saying yummmm or no! We are seriously down to about 12 things that she will eat. I just make sure that I give her veggies first and the rest of the meal is healthy. Sometimes she eats everthing sometimes barely eats. Just hang in, if they were normally good eaters, they will eat when they are hungry.

Good luck,

M.

Hi Nicole, I too am a mother of twins. 2 year old boys. I go through the same thing with my boys, well, actually just one of them. It is probably just a phase & where they are at in growth. Trust me, they will not starve and they will eat when they are hungry. I just offer food at every meal, and either he eats or he doesn't. And if he gets hungry, he will let me know. I can always tell when they hit a "growth spurt" because they will eat constantly. And then after a week or so of eating constantly, he will just stop. But it always comes back around to eating again. I also found that he will attempt to eat more if he is in "control" of his food. I stopped trying to assist in the feeding, let him be a big boy and do it himself. He was more likely to eat at least a little bit if he could do it all himself. I hope my experience can at least offer some reassurance for you. If you have any other questions, or want to share more about twins, send me a message:)

It's a phase. My son did this too (there was a solid week where I swear all he ate was toast). Make sure they're eating almost all finger foods at this stage - you really don't need to be feedign them at all and I think sometimes refusal to eat at this age is a control thing. They're also old enough that you can give them a spoon and fork of their own to use. We just kept offering small quantities of real adult food to our son and eventually he eats something. If I try 4 or 5 things and he pushes them all away (or throws them on the floor), though, I figure he's just not that hungry so I end the meal. Don't worry too much about it - they'll eat when they're hungry.

Hi Nicole,
I think it might be a phase. I seem to remember my oldest going through something very similar. I was beside myself . . .it did pass though and he went back to his old ways.

In the mean time, just continue to offer things they like and when they are hungry again, they will eat.

I know its frustrating, hang in there!
