OK, I know this has been asked before, and I have searched for answers, but, I am still in the dark. I am considering getting a device for my just turned 5 year old daughter. I'd like it to grow with her, yet I don't want to pay a monthly fee, at least not in the beginning. I like the Nook, but does that require a monthly service fee? The website was unclear to me. Anyway, do you have suggestions to a product your child enjoys? Or you have decided on something you will be giving as a gift this year, and why did you choose it? TIA!!

What can I do next?

None of the tablets have monthly fees unless you plan on purchasing a data plan to go online when you don't have access to Wifi. I have an iPhone and use an iPad for work so giving my kids our old phones and iPads has always been our solution. To go out and buy one just for your daughter, I'd go with either Kindle Fire or Nook. I don't really know how extensive the apps are for them but I'm sure there will be lots of things to download for your daughter as she gets older. When you buy electronics though, you can't think any longer than 5 years on the device (even laptops and computers). Technology changes quite a bit over just 2 years so don't buy something that will be great for her in HS. Just enough to cover her for her elementary school years.

I have kindle fires for both my kids. As long as you have wifi you don't need a monthly subscription. HOWEVER, I do have an amazon prime membership. It cost me $79 for one year, and it gives the kids access to extra stuff -- like tv shows and movies through amazon. But it paid for itself in no time, because it gives me free two day shipping, and I do buy a lot of stuff through amazon, so for me it was worth it.

There are tons of free apps and free books, so I rarely buy them for my kids. It is the only Christmas gift I have ever bought for them that they have enjoyed from Christmas to Christmas. Also - Amazon customer service is fantastic to work with - I had a problem with the charging port in one of the kids' kindles, and they shipped me a new one within 2 days - no questions asked.

We went to staples and bought the kids each a tablet that was on clearance. They wear about $150 each. They don't require any contract of services. We can go sit in McDonalds and get on their free internet service and go to the market and download any game or application we want. If you want to buy some stuff there are ways to do that but we're quite happy with the free stuff. Hubby did buy the version of mine craft so he could host the kids on it then all 3 of them can play in the same world.

You play the games on it but some of them only work where there is wireless service, like joining a mine craft world, you can only do that through an internet connection. We can do that at McDonald's, Burger King, at home on our internet service, or even at the farm on my FIL's wireless modem.

You don't have to pay anyone for any kind of service unless you buy the tablet through your cell service provider then they want a lot of money each month.

WE PAY NOTHING OTHER THAN THE PURCHASE OF THE TABLET> we do not pay anyone or any company any money to have total internet service with full access to the Android Market where there are literally millions of applications, games, books, and just about any thing you might want to have on a tablet.
