Both kids had fever and other flu like symptoms last week. 10 month old had an ear infection, that is gone, but he is still coughing and has a runny nose.
My 3 yr old was fine, but now has runny nose, cough and just today got diarrhea.
I got sick a few days ago with fever, runny nose and cough. No one has a fever any more, but everyone is still miserable.
I am nursing so I can’t take anything. I give the 3 year old honey for her cough, and plugged in the vicks things for each...but feel like I am now out of options. I know something is going around, but I am worried about the sudden diarrhea.
I am against antibiotics and medicine in general unless it is critical.

Diarrhea can be "treated" w/ rice, toast, crackers, must you must push fluids to prevent dehydration.

Sometimes coughs can last for several weeks. Prop heads up @ night, 2 pillows or books under pillows) that always helps my kids.

Running a cool mist humidifier can help ease discomfort & can prevent viruses.

I think I'd invest in a big can of Lysol & start disinfecting everything.. toys, remotes, bedding, toilet handles, doors, etc.

A cold can last 3 weeks. Drink lots and lots of tea. Even a three yr old or younger can have tea with honey. I hope you all feel better. When we are all sick we try to cheer up with a tea party. i know you dont feel well but it helps to keep everyones spirits up.

Just make sure that they get enough liquids & juice so it doesn't get serious. I don't want to tell you to buy medicine or go to the dr for antibiotics if you don't believe in them. But I do know its hard to cure gastroenteritis (stomach bug) without some kind of medicine. Here are a few remedies I've heard of. Just remember if theres blood or mucus its usually a sign of a parasite. You should look for a homeopathic or holistic dr or nurse in your area.

*Arsenicum works really well. I only know where to get it online but I'm sure you can get it at a local store.
*1/2 tsp. lemon, 1/2 tsp. ginger, & 1/4 tsp. pepper powder drink 2x a day.
*Drink blackberry tea for mild diarrhea.
*Oregano oil or ginger tea. Ginger tea also helps with the cramps.
*Try ginger ale or carrot juice. NO CAFFEINE.
*Boil brown rice and water for 45 minutes eat the rice (it contains Vitamin B) and drink the water.

These should all be safe to my knowledge. Let us know how they worked for you!

probiotics for the stomach bug, found in yogurt and pills you can get at the healthfood store (they seemed to help my kids more than yogurt) for the cough, if its worse at night put a pillow under the head of the babys crib mattress to prop his head let the 3 year old use a pillow. also steam up the bathroom and sit in there for about 20 mins. hope this helps! ps dont give anything for a fever unless its high thats the bodys way of fighting off infections!

Have you considered taking them to see a pediatrician, considering that this has gone on for over a week and your family seems to be just passing it around? Yes, I realize this isn't life-threatening but everyone is miserable. The diarrhea would be of concern to me because it is very easy to become dehydrated which could lead to further, critical complications.

Ditto all the other responses - just one more thing - throw out all your toothbrushes and open new ones. If you can't afford new ones, run the current ones through the dishwasher so your not reinfecting yourselves.

And gotta have homemade chicken noodle soup. Unless your too sick to boil the chicken bones, then canned will have to substitute until you're better.

Hi Larisa,

I would suggest adding lots of vitamin C, zinc, and sunshine to your kids' days, throughout the winter and colds season. At the first sign of a cold, you could swab your kids' ears out with hydrogen peroxide and whoever is able could frequently gargle with a 1:1 solution H2O2/Water. It tends to ward off a cold.

Good luck!

I, like you, try to avoid medicines for all of us, unless it's really necessary. To strengthen the immune system, try elderberry syrup--it has completely kicked 95% of the sickness in our house, and has really lessened the severity of the other 5% of illnesses. Take it at the first sign of sickness--even babies can take it. For my kids, I either use a liquid syringe (like the one that's used to measure most kids' medicines) or I use the syrup to make a "juice," diluting it with water.

These past few weeks, we were all sick at one time or another, and I didn't stay on top of it all very well. So I got a nasty cold. My mom told me to try Umcka--it is wonderful stuff. Again, a natural remedy, and even kids can take it. You take small amounts of the liquid several times a day until your symptoms subside--by the third "dose" I had noticed a huge change in my congestion, cough, and just the way I felt.

Try these things, they really do work. I feel like I'm still learning about natural remedies, but I'm so thankful to have discovered these two. Be well!
