Kidney Pain

I am planning on going to the Dr's today... but... I need to know if any of you have had the following symptoms. For two days in a row I have had excrutiating pain in my lower back (kidney area), it is not muscular or skeletal, it is definately my kidneys. And sorry to get graphic, but my urine is a very strong unusual smell (like metal)

The first day it happened I drank lots of water and cranberry juice and I took motrin for the pain. It subsided, only to flare up again the next day and I did the same routine. I've heard of kidney stones and kidney infections, and I was wondering if any of you had these problems and what your symptoms were and how it was treated?

I'm really nervous!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went to the Dr's today and it turns out that I have a bladder infection (UTI) and the pain from that is radiating into my back. I am being treated with high dosage of antibiotics. The pain is still there, but I haven't been on the antibiotics for a full 24 hours yet. I am taking motrin for the pain to help me get through my day and drive my children around. They did a urine check and it did show signs of bacteria and blood. I go back to my doctors on Monday. I thank you all for your comments and words of comfort! You all really put my mind at ease and I actually had a good nights rest last night! whewwwwwww!

Thank you my mamasource women! I appreciate it!

STOP THE MOTRIN!!!! I developed a UTI (about 5 years ago) and it spread to the kidneys to help with the pain I took generic motrin (ibprofin) and due to dehydration caused my kidneys to shut down. The combo of the infection, dehydration, and motrin was the cause. I was in the hospital for a month and nearly died. Switch to Tylonol, it is easier on the kidneys and will work just as well.

I've had problems with kidney stones. You get a lot of pain in your lower back and then it eventually goes down through your leg. I also felt like I was constipated, but really I was passing a stone! I didn't have the metal smell though. When I finally went to the doctor, they did xrays and an MRI to see what was going on. They saw the stones, but fortunately they were small enough and I was going to have to tough it out and pass them. If the stones get too big, they blast them in your kidney and then you pass the bits. You'll get pain med.'s and get to pee through a strainer so you can catch the little buggers to see what they're made of so you can adjust your diet. My problem, too much calcium. Of all things, huh?
Good luck at the doctor today. No matter what, you'll feel better just knowing what's going on and taking a course of action.

What did your doctor say? I have gotten many Urinary Tract Infections over the years and now I buy the sticks in the store to test myself. If it says I have one, I call right away to get a prescription, some doctors will give you only an antibiotic and some give that and a pain pill. If your doctor does not give you a pain pill you can buy those over the counter. The tests and pain pills are located near the yeast infection creams at most pharmacies. I hope you went to the doctor today and are already starting to feel better. Goodnight, rest up and have a good weekend.

I would not wait to go to the doctors. You should have gone when the pain got bad and when your urine was dark and with a strong oder. I have been fighting a UTI for a year now. My problem is different as I have never had a symptom due to being on a steroid. But you have the pain and you with young kids you don't want or need anything serious.
Because I have no symptoms of either kidney or UTI pain I have been in Septic Shock twice. Very scary. So please go to the doctors and take care of your pain and discomfort.

It does sound like kidney but if it isn't, ask your Dr. if it might be the celiac valve. This is the valve that opens and closes between the large and small intestine. During my last pregnancy I had very bad pain which was actually causing contractions. My OB couldn't figure out what it was so I went to a kinesiologist. He figured out my problem and actually stopped the contractions with only one visit. Good luck!

Hi L....

I believe you might very well have a kidney infection. I am a mother of three children who are almost grown. I have had kidney infections and my 18 year old is just now recovering from one. It is not something you can cure at home. It sometimes takes a special antibiotic shot. My daughter had to have 2 shots and 2 booster shots. When I took her to the doctor the doctoer tapped on her back in the kidney area and she was in horrible pain. He pressed on her abdomen (the front of the kidneys) and she was in horrible pain. She also had a urninary tract infection. I highly recommend making an appointment with your primary care physician.

I know most of mamasourse is new moms but sometimes us older moms who still have mid age to raise can be very helpful. Feel free to email me for questions.

Take care and God Bless.

I had kidney stones twice, once when pregnant. The first time, no kids at the time, was on a Friday afternoon a weird back pain with spasms. I have a very high pain tolerence and kept tring to work through it. On Sunday, I finally went to the ER and got pain meds and an ultrasound. They were inconclusive and they told me to follow up w/ my doctor in 3 days. I kept working and by day 2 was violently vomiting and could not stand up. I had a huge stone and ended up w/ surgery that night. It was too big to beak down with sound waves. The second time I was 5 month pregnant w/ baby #3. I immediately called both OB and internist who both advised the ER. I got a shot of morephine and high on that I told my mother- in-law if the baby was a boy, we would name hiom nRocco since he was giving me Rocks. Sure enough, I have a son named Rocco and that time I just had to take drugs and it passed. There are many less strong drugs that will work for stones but are not pregnancy safe. Get yourself to a doctor ASAP!

I get urinary tract infections, especially when I am expecting, and I often don't know I have the infection, whcih starts in the bladder, until it does reach my kidneys. You should tell your doctor and ask for labwork. They will do a urine test, sometimes at the doctor's office and sometimes at the lab, and if they find blood and bacteria they will prescribe antibiotics. Please go today, or go to an urgent care, because if you go untreated it will only hurt worse.

hi,
i may not know a whole lot about some things, but kidney infections im sad to say i know tons about. the doc will often give antibiotics to flush out the infection,a 1 to 2 week course.some antibiotics are ok to take while nursing,i dont know if you still are or if your girls are older. but being consistent with water intake and cranberry juice (unsweetened is best but very sour/bitter...the natural food stores often carry it,its called "just cranberry") avoid sugar, caffeine and try to eat things that are not acidic...with two girls the pain is likely to be the most difficult part, since it will make you feel miserable...you can get to yogurt with live cultures, those are good to combat yeast and kidney infections.. heat over the kindeys is very important too, keep them covered, use a hot water bottle or a hot pack, this not only feels soothing but helps the infection clear out.
mostly just be consistent about drinking enough water, the general rule is to take you body weight, divide it in half and thats how many onces of water (not juice or soda or anything, just water) that your body ideally needs to stay properly hydrated.
hope this helps!

Hi L.. You probably have already been to the doctor by now. But I just wanted to tell you about the experience I had that sounds a little like your pain. I was 18 yrs. old and had really bad pain like you describe. It lasted for two days with a visit to the ER on both days. The second visit to the ER they finally figured out I had a large kidney stone. They had to put me under to extract it. It was a real good size. This caused the pain for the two days and conected it to my calcium intake in my diet! I loved Milk, cheese and ice cream! I have since cut back on those lovely things since they told me I will be coming back for more extractions of stones in my future. Hang in there and drink tons of water and cranberry juice. Hopefully, if it is a stone, it will pass on its own!! Take care and good luck. They say passing a kidney stone is the same pain level as child birth. I wouldn't know- I had 3 scheduled c-sections!

I have had huge problems with my Kidneys in the past including 3 real bad infections and a stone. Trust me if it is a stone you would know. The pain is worse then child birth by a mile. Sounds like you probably have an urinary track infection. Good thing to go to the doctor. Especially if you have a fever. If the pain is un bearable even with over the counter meds go right to the hospital because it is probably a stone. If you are very very weak, vomiting and feverish you might be in for 2 to 3 weeks of bed time. I sure hope not....Good luck!

I had the same thing. Mine ended up being kidney stones. They had to do surgery to get them out. (I didn't have to be cut, just went up with a tube and a hammer thing). That didn't work so they had to try again this time with a lazer.) All is well now. The thing I found helped the most was apple cider vinegar pills. (You can get them at a Health store like GNC.) They took the pain way so well and I didn't have any side affects like I did with the pain medicine. If you need anything else let me know. I've been through it.

I had this exact thing happen to me. It sounds like a UTI. A Urinary Tract Infection. When I was 6 months pregnant I got this same thing. I only had the pain issue not the urine but they told me that it would have come to that is I had waited to go in. They did a renal ultrasound (mostly because I was pregnant) and they gave me some antibiotics. They didn't take the pain away right away but for that I took Tylenol Extra Strength RAPID RELEASE. That is the best stuff in the world. I don't usually take Tylenol but at the time that was all I could take. IT WORKS WITHIN 10 MIN!!!!!! I took the antibiotics for 10 ten and I only needed the Tylenol for about 2 days just enough time for the antibiotics to kick in. Good Luck!!

L. don't be scared, but be concerned. You may have a conditon called pylonephritis, commonly calle kidney infection. This is treated with antibiotics just like a regular urinary tract infection. the metal smell could be trace blood which goes hand in hand with type of infection. YOU WILL BE FINE!.
They will take a urine and dip it for blood and if possitive do and x-ray/ultra sound.

Take good care of yourself and ask a lot of question about prevention. Water has to be a big part of your day. Cut back on all soda pop. coffee and non herbal teas with caffine can also contribute to dehydration. DRINK WATER every day. 8 glasses a day.

Also, after sex go to the bathroom and urinate. This get rid of any bacteria which can go into the urethra during sex. And most important do not hold your urine. Go to the bathroom regularly. If you drink enough water your body will have to go.

Ihope this helps. I have suffered years with UTI's, which can develope into kidney infections.

I am also an RN.

BE proactive about your health!

From what you are saying it sounds like bladder infection. You need to check with a doctor and he/she should give you some antibiotics for it and you will be fine.I had one years ago.Your urine is darker, pain in the back(I thought I pulled something)because of my thinking I did not go to the doctor for a week or two. I ended up with severe pain in the back and the begining of blood poisoning from it.This is how I ended up in the hospital for a day.It is nothing if you just take care of it ,and you can do it with water and cranberry juice. But it is something you do not full around with once you have the pain, odor, darker urine. This is what the doctor told me at the time.See your doctor ,you'll be okay!!Keep drinking those liquids.P.S. It kinda sounds like a bacterial infection, which can be caused by numerous things. It can occur when the PH in your vagina changes. It also could be a UTI, urinary tract infection which could also be caused by the PH change in your vagina. The best thing is to get some tests run, so you know for sure b/c bacterial can cause infertility.

If you have the same problem I have then your utis might go to a kidney infection without you even noticing anythings the matter which sucks! anyways, no reason to be nervous so long as you get it treated quickly cuz apparently it can cause big problems. Hi there. I experienced something very similar a little over 5 years ago. I woke up about 4 in the morning and I could barely move. I was trying to get pregnant at the time, so I was very worried. I had my husband take me to the emergency room. We spent the entire day there getting tests done. The first thing the doctors noticed was that I was dehydrated. I was surprised by this, seeing that I drink water night and day. They had a very hard time getting an IV into my veins because of this. The docotors that checked me were sure it was a kidney stone, but couldn't see it. They gave me an ultrasound instead of the regular tests, because I was trying to get prenant, but most of it was inconclusive. When all was said and done, there was no kidney stone(s), but I was pregnant!!! I was of course very happy about that, but very confused about how I felt. The only thing they could think of that could have caused the pain was that I might have had a bad reaction to the antibiotics I was on at the time. I was at the tail end of having strep throat, and the antiobiotics I was on were supposed to be safe in case I got pregnant. I don't know if you have anything similar going on in your life, but hopefully this helps a litte. I am now a happy mom to two wonderful girls, and I had nothing similar the second time I got pregnant.

Your doctor hopefully gave you something stronger for the pain and told you to go home and try and drink as much water as you possibly can. The last time I had one I had my husband go buy a gallon bottle of water and I drank it all that evening. I am not sure what amount is safe to drink in a short period of time, but flushing your kidney's is definitely the least painful way to deal with kidney stones. (I have been hospitalized twice with huge kidney stones) drinking the water the third time was the easiest Good luck

Dear L.,

I am an x-ray technologist and know what I know from doing Intravenous Pyelograms (IVPs) on patients to diagnose kidney stones. (due to the evolution of technology, the tendency these days is to do a Cat Scan of the abdomen and pelvis without contrast instead of IVPs) First, there are other things that it could be. The doctor will have an idea of what it might be (including stone[s]) after talking to you, and will run tests and treat accordingly. Some stones are passed with out intervention. If you are unable to pass the stone (usually due to size, I believe) treatments include lythotripsy (I believe, breaking down the stone with shock waves) so the particles can be passed or surgery. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but usually, people tend to be "formers" - that is, once you have had a stone, the odds are really good that you will get them periodically after that. I have a friend who gets them once in a while, and he stays home for a couple days and drinks massive amounts of water to push it through. They used to say that if you are a "former" to avoid calcium, but I have heard now that that has been disproven. Drink lots of water to keep your system flushed.

Good luck!

I had a similar problem. I saw my chiropractic doctor and he had me drink Coca-cola plus lemon juice. I wasn't given any proportions so what I did was pour about a 12 oz. glass of coke and added juice from about 1/2 lemon. He said that this is a good antidote to kidney or gall bladder stones as it will dissolve them. It worked for me almost immediately. I drank this combination several times until I felt relief and then periodically when I would feel pain coming on.

Hi L.,

Oh, I'm sure you have a kidney stone. I have had 25 kidney stone since I was 18 (I am now 40). It is so painful. The pain in the back is when the stone is going down the ureters. Then it can sit in your bladder for a long time before you give birth to it. It is amazing when that comes out. You will feel like you have to pee every two seconds, you kinda push a bit at times and then it comes out. The only way usually to get through the pain in the back is strong drugs like demoral. I hate drugs!! Giving birth to kids and to kidney stones are the only times I request something. Good luck with it. Last kidney stone for me was when I was 8 months pregnant with my now 18 month old boy.

Respond if you need some help of finding a great doctor!!

Hi sorry to hear you are having so much pain. I have a kidney stone disease and when you have stones that move to cause pain you usually feel like throwing up and you run a low grade fever. If you have a kidney infection you usually have burning of the urine and it does have a bad odor. You may have a bladder infection which hurts and smells. The doctor must run a urine test and you should have an ultra sound or x-ray of the area that hurts so you can see what the real problem is.If it is kidney motrin and advil are not good for kidney only tylenol or a pain killer that your doctor would prescribe.Keep drinking the water it will help any problem that you may have.Good luck D. I think it is good that you went to the doctor. It sounds like a Urinary Tract Infection to me. I work in a doctor's office so I see this stuff all the time.

By the time there is pain around the lower back and to the side, there is a deep infection. The kidney itself does not have the ability to feel pain, so when it is sick, and the sickness enlarges to areas near it, you will have pain. THUS, it is an extensive and well ingrained disease by the time you have pain.

Pain that traveles from top to bottom or pain that is generally only on the side may be a kidney stone that has lodged in the tube that goes from the kidney to the bladder. This may block the ability of some or all of the urine to come into the bladder, and thus it builds up in the kidney, and may enlarge the kidney.

Sometimes this type of lateral pain is from infection only and not from a stone. Infection causes inflamation, and inflamation causes swelling which can nearly or completely close the ureter.

In ANY CASE, this is not to be ignored, AND NOT TO BE DOCTORED AT HOME. The use of cranberry juice must be done with understanding, because it can do just the OPPOSITE of what you want. Cranberry juice causes a more acid PH in the blood, which may only aggrivate the situation.

Anyone who has EVER had a kiney or urinary infection in the past is more PRONE to have them frequently throughout life.

If your parents or siblings have had it, you may also be prone to have kidney or bladder problems.

You are young and will be able to stay out of terrible trouble over kidney and bladder problems with careful work under an M.D.'s care.

Those who are over 40 and have a history of these problems get more severe complications in general.

The elderly usualy end up getting mentally confused, fall, and
break something, which brings them to the hospital and the diagnosis of kidney problems is made while they are trying to clear up the mental confusion and fix the break! As soon as the infection is gone, their mental faculties return.

It requires urine and blood tests and maybe a sonogram of areas. It sually requires antibiotics.

Sometimes, kidney infection will lead to a discovery of diabetes.

Hope this helps!
