My 3 year old daughter was recently invited to a classmate's birthday party, which she was unable to attend. Should we still give a gift? (He will be attending her birthday party next month. I don't know if this matters or not). Thanks in advance for any advice!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to all of the Moms who answered my question! All of the answers were very helpful! I took the advice of the Mom who suggested sending my daughter's classmate the gift card. Problem solved! Thanks again!

Well that is tricky isn't it. Technically, if they can't make the party and it's not a good/close friend then you don't really need a gift...but if that child is coming to her party, then I do suggest getting a little something. Maybe as Lynn suggested a card and maybe a small amount gift card on the inside. That way you can mail it to her and not worry about it.

Did she want to attend the party and just couldn't because of scheduling? If so, I would get a present or at the very least a card.

Depends, if he is a good friend that she sees outside of school, yes, I would have her give him a little gift. If she doesn't know him that well, and it's just a case of both kids are inviting large groups such as the whole class, I wouldn't feel it is necessary.

If they are good friends (i.e. they see each other outside of school), they I would still get him a gift. Otherwise, you don't need to get a gift if you are not attending. That is the etiquette that is practiced by everyone within my daughter's playgroup.

I would at least send a card with $5 in it.

Unless it would take money out of your budget for something important then I would go ahead and send a gift. what is it going to hurt, especially if they are going to come to your party too.

No. It's like a wedding - you don't go, you don't need to bring a gift.

Everyone handles it differently--My daughter always wants to give her friends a gift for their birthday even if they don't have a party LOL! So I let her give a $5 gift. SHe never gets anything in return (not expecting it--just mentioning it here) unless the child is invited to her birthday. SInce her birthday is in the summer usually only 2-3 kids can come because they are away at camp or on vacation. One of her new best friends just had a birthday 2 weeks ago (we found out on Thursday). She wants to get her something because her friend's family can't afford to do birthday parties and they live in a small house (no yard really). I did think to myself, "I hope they don't think we're doing this because she will be invited to my daughter's party." If I were you, it would be a nice gesture to give a small gift. It is the thought that counts after all. Enjoy the party!

I'm honestly not sure, but was interested in what other moms had to say. Good luck!

at least around here, if you get an invitation, you give a gift--even if you can't go. my son got a ton of presents at school before his party from all the kids who couldn't make it

Dear Beanies Mom, I think a small gift is in order. Find out what the child likes and get something nice. Grandma Mary
