Kid Safe Space Heater

My house does not currently have central air or heat. During the summer we have window units in all of the rooms to provide AC, but now I am in need of heaters for the rooms. I have a 4 year old son who is very scared of anything hot (Sensory Processing Disorder), but I am needing a space heater for his room. His room has poor insulation and it is starting to get chilly at night in there. Does anyone have any suggestions on a kid safe, cool touch space heater I can put in his room that has a thermostat so it turns off at a certain temperature? Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

I have the honeywell cool touch heater and I love it. It works really well but is safe because it's completely cool to the touch. Plus it automatically shuts off if it falls over. I bought it 2 years ago when my son was born but recently saw it listed as top 5 space heaters in real simple magazine :)

I don't know the brand names, but there was a good one on the front page on the Menard's black friday flier. Fleet Farm also sells kid safe cool touch space heaters. My husband says the Menards ones are better. I think each one heats 500 sq ft.

I wouldn't use any kind of portable space heater in my child's room unsupervised, thermostat or not. I'd look into getting a vented heater and having it installed by a professional. It will be more expensive, but will be a much safer option.

If you want just a space heater, EdenPURE is pretty good and it's VERY child-safe. It seems a little spendy at first but it warms a room very well without overheating it and it remains cool to the touch. You can warm a few rooms with it, actually. They don't take up a lot of space. When our oil is low we use our EdenPURE. I was hesitant about getting one, but my husband was insistent because oil prices can be so outrageous, but honestly the electricity ends up being about the same if you were to use it nonstop without ever turning either off.

It's very quiet with just a low hum, and it doesn't blast hot air. It has two warmth settings.

I have a daughter with Autism and Sensory Integration Disorder and she loves this heater. She says it's gentle.

Just to clarify... we do have a central furnace (the AC heat pump compressor died a couple of years ago), but the rooms they are in tend to stay cooler (They are staying in the remodeled garage... it is insulated, and has heating vents, but it is cooler than the rest of the house.) We do have one of the safe oil-filled type that looks like a radiator, but K. is afraid that Gavin will be scared of it because it does get warm.

Before I had central heat/air installed, I had the ac window units that had heat also.

I use a portable oil filled radiator in my bedroom and it keeps the room toasty. It doesn't get hot enough to be unsafe. It has a thermostat.

We just bought the Duraflame space heater from QVC and it is fabulous! It was about $100 and is cool to the touch. It looks like a little wood burning stove but doesn't look as cheesy as it sounds. It's actually one of the better looking ones, seriously. A couple of years ago we had looked at another one very similar to this but was about $400 so we never bought it. When we saw this one we went ahead and ordered it, we've had it about 2 weeks and it has really helped!

It doesn't have a thermostat but it does have two heat settings and you can turn off the "flame" lights so that it is just black if that would bother him while he slept. The only down side is that it's a little bit noisier than I expected. It would provide some good white noise in a bedroom and would help drown out other noises, but the noise is the worst part about it...although we've pretty much gotten used to it so it's not too big of deal.
