Hello!
I am looking to start a play group in South Minneapolis, and I am wondering if anyone in the area knows of kid-friendly coffee shops?
Thanks, everyone! I live right near the Riverview and Fireroast, so we're going this weekend to both!!
The Riverview coffee shop at 42nd Ave and 38th Street is great. They have a nice play area for kids with lots of toys.

I've never actually been to Sovereign Grounds in South Minneapolis but know a lot of people that go there because it's a great place to get coffee and has an awesome kids play area. I belong to a multiples group and many moms with their kids would meet there on a regular basis. Here is their website: http://www.sovereigngrounds.com/
Right across the street from the Riverview Theatre at 38th Street and 42nd Avenue South: Riverview Cafe. They have a great little play area with toys. Lots of parents and children go there daily. You'll love it!
This sounds great! Have you got any responses to your question. I myself have a 2 year old and another child on the way. My husband and I just bought a home in South Minneapolis, it would be nice to know kid friendly place to hang out at, especially coffee houses. I know there are some North that do story time, etc. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Most Caribou Coffee's have kids corners - with stuffed animals, crayons, chalk, toys, etc. Some are bigger than others so you may want to call ahead but in my experience they really welcome kids there!
There are two that have play areas. One is called Sovern Grounds just off Chicago and 48th. The other is called Riverview Cafe. If you look that one up on line it looks like a bar. Don't be alarmed. It is attached to one, but the coffee shop is lovely.

There are several I know of:
- Tillie's Bean has a very small little corner with books and toys if you have a smaller group of kids(and they are family run)
- Riverside Cafe on 38th street across from the movie theater has a big toy area and great food/coffee. It is also attached to a wine bar that I would recommend for a non-kid outing.
- Sovereign Grounds has a whole room dedicated to toys and play areas (has a little playhouse and slide). It gets pretty crazy in there when other playgroups are there - fyi.
I can't think of anymore right now, but there are a lot in the area.
We have always loved Sovereign Grounds on the conner of 48th and Chicago. Their play room has lots of couches and toys for younger kids. View pictures at their web site.

I've also found McDonald's with playareas to be very mom-friendly.
caribou has a childs play area
There is one on the corner of 38th and 42nd Ave S. called Riverside Cafe (I think) that has a small play area just for that very purpose!
As others have already mentioned, Sovereign Grounds and Riverview Cafe both have large play areas for kids (Sovereign Grounds is the biggest). Nokomis Beach Coffee at 50th St and 28th Ave S (right up the hill from the little beach at Lake Nokomis) has a small kids area, and they are very sweet with my kids. Fireroast Mountain Cafe (38th St and 37th Ave--in Longfellow) also has a small play area in the back.
Betsy's Back Porch is kid-friendly and on 54th and Nicollet Ave.
Sovereign Grounds at 813 East 48th Street is the most kid friendly coffee shop that I have ever been to.
There is a coffee shop just accross from the Riverview theatre. I think it's called the riverview cafe) they have a great kid area filled with toys!
The Riverview, 42nd Ave @ 38th St. Coffee, Food, WINE, and a Kids' play area. :D
Hi A.,
Sovereign Grounds Coffee Shop on 48th street, right near the corner of 48th and Chicago, has a room totally for the kids, with couches for the adults as well! There are a lot of toys, including "big" toys -- playhouse, small climbing structure, etc. My 3-year-old daughter loves it! Nice neighborhood too -- Amazon Bookstore and TurtleBread right across the street. There's also the Riverview Cafe at 42nd Ave. and 38th street, which is really nice, but the play area is pretty small, so it might be hard to have a playgroup there. Good luck! S.
Riverview Cafe @ 42nd Avenue in the Longfellow neighbourhood.
Riverview Cafe at 42nd and 38th Street is great!
There are two great kid-friendly shops in south Minneapolis. Both are on 42nd St. One is Fireroast Mountain Cafe ( I think I got the name right). It is on 37th Ave and 42nd. The other (my favorite) is the Riverview Cafe. Is has a special stage like area for kids with a great underwater scene on the walls. Enjoy!
There seem to be a couple that I know of. One is Anodyne on Nicollet and I think 38ish. Also, there is one in the Powderhorn neighborhood called Mayday cafe.
Hope this helps, J.
The Riverview Cafe on 38th St and 42nd Ave S has a great play area and very comfortable for a playgroup. Fireroast Mountain Cafe Also on 38th St has a play group. I really like the riverview.
Heck, I live south and plan to print this great list for myself.
I live four blocks from Mayday which is on the corner of Bloomington and 36th- Not only do they have books and toys, it is full of second family (grandparent, aunt/uncle types), willing to hold and play with your child if you need a quick break to eat hot food or have any desire to finish a fair trade cup of coffee HOT! I like the riverview for older kids who know what toys are but for babies, Mayday is the best!
Maybe I will see you around. Q
