I was just informed that my soon to be 5 year old has Keratosis pilaris. Although she's unaware of her skin condition, I feel it when I wash her and put lotion on her. And with winter coming, I'm sure it will appear even worse. Her skin is sensitive and I'm reluctant to use what is recommended, alpha-hydroxy acids. Is there anything else that might minimize the appearance of these little bumps?

My daughter was diagnosed with this skin condition at the age of 4. A friend of mine sells Shaklee products and they make a bar soap that works wonders on my daughters skin. The bumps have gone down significantly and she doesn't have any itching. In the winter, I also use Aquafor after she is all dried off from the tub (in place of a lotion). Good Luck!
I have had this my entire life, and now my daughter also has it. For me i use Eucerin plus which works pretty well. YOu will never get it to go away but the winter is really hard on my daughters skin and she also has sensitive skin. Eucerin Plus will work for a little while and the dermatologist also suggested something called vani cream which you can get at walgreens. That works for a couple weeks then stops. I usually switch between the 2 lotions. I used the Hydroxy acids and the lactin acid until one day the bumps were really raw on her and she started screaming because it burned. I will never use it again.
We just saw a dermatologist b/c our KP on our 5 yr old got infected. I highly suggest using the alpha hydroxy. You only use a little bit and I can't believe the difference in her skin after just a few uses, we use Eucerin plus. Our Dr also said use an antibacteria soap to help stop the bumps from getting infected from the natural bacteria on her body. We use the cetaphyl bar. Tight or clothes that cause friction can cause the bumps to get infected.
AmLactin lotion. Sold over the counter. Excellent for Keratosis Pilaris. It is chock full of Alpha Hydroxy acids, but it doesn't burn, and alpha hydroxy acids are really the best treatment for KP. They are not dangerous in any way for your child. I use for my son, and I use it too because it makes my skin look great. KP always flares up in the winter because of the dry air.
I've had it all my life, and it's really no big deal. I wouldn't consider it a "skin condition" -- it's something that just is. If you can feel it but not see it, that's pretty good! Maybe worry about it when she's a teenager and wants to go sleeveless. Buy her the products then if she wants them. If she's happy and not worried about it, keep it moisturized with lotion so it doesn't get dry and catch her clothing and otherwise ignore it.
Nutrition and supplementation is greatly helpful. My daughter had it when she was around 6. I wouldn't use the alpha hydroxy acids. Get to the root of the cause.

As an Esthetician I would not recommend AHA to use on your 5 year old. It's a very strong exfoliant! What I can suggest is to use more natural ways to exfoliate the area when you're giving her a bath like using an exfoliating glove and after that use a good hydrating cream, Cetaphil is actually great for sensitive skin and safe to use regularly for kids, the key is to keep her skin hydrated and not dry especially during these cold months. Stay away from harsh soaps and bubble baths! I have heard that chewable omega 3 supplements for kids also help with Keratosis Pilaris! Hope this helps!
Avon sells a "skin bump minimizer" for that condition. Go to Avon.com and check it out. It has gotten very good reviews. It is also pretty inexpensive.
what did your doctor recommend? I can only tell you that when my oldest was around 1, (he is now almost 21) he had the worst case of eczema ever. I took him to a dermatologist. they gave us some prescription ointment. also, they told us NOT to bathe him everyday. just wipe him off with a warm washcloth. also, they had us slick him up with plain old vaseline. this took care of everything. we never really used soap on him either. they said it was too drying. so, if you have not received solid info from the doctor, seek out a good dermatologist. we took our son to dr. kemp at dreyer in aurora when he was a baby. also, now we go to dr. blazsak in geneva.
