Yes, it will be fine. :)
Another tip (until you can get it stitched) that my son's karate school showed us, in the early years, was to roll the waist. The waist is elastic all the way around, right? With LOTS of room in the hips/crotch. So roll the elastic waistband over once or twice to help with length, until you can adjust/stitch the hem at the bottom of the pants.
Ummm.... isn't that hemming?
Is it the right size Gi?
In my daughter's Karate school, the parent either hems the pants, or folds them up. That way, the length can be taken down as the child grows. Or you just get a bigger sized Gi.
Now, I have seen kids' Gi's that are hemmed in various ways. Some are hemmed properly, via sewing. Some kids I see, their pants are merely taped up...or rolled up. Depends on the ability of the parent, per hemming and sewing.
But yes, as you said, folding and stitching it, is hemming. That is sewing.
That is fine.
My son's gi is too long for him too. I keep telling myself I need to pin it so that it doesn't come undone during class. I don't want to hem it because I'm afraid he'll get taller and then it won't fit and I'll have to buy the same size again just because I hemmed it. Hope this helps & thanks for the reminder that I need to do that tonight!
yeah, if you just fold it and stitch it, it should be fine. I am not good at sewing, which I wish I knew how. But I can stitch. And if you can't stitch, then either use that sticky velcro--sticky on one side, or use pins. Either way, it should be just fine.
My son's kung fu uniform is too long in the legs so we just roll it. Because I'm so not about to sew something (I stapled my 2 year old's cave man Halloween costume after cutting it to fit how I wanted...I can't even sew a button). If your child's just started karate, I am guessing he won't be attending a tournament anytime in the immediate future, where I can understand things needing to look top notch. I say roll it OR if his instructor is strict on uniform, I've seen that tape Jen P on TV and I bet you can find something like it in a fabric shop. Just ask a sales associate there.
I have no clue reg the rules of Karate Gi, but I guess it should be ok. Well, use a thread of the same color as the Gi (white, right?), so that it wont show if its a hem or a stitch unless someone looks closer...
Folding and stitching IS hemming as far as I know. You're fine.
