HI K.,
I usually break open a Vitamin E capsule and put the liquid on the canker sores and that seems to help. Sometimes though they are stubborn and won't move but more times than not I use the vitamin E. HOpe this helps.

My biology teacher in high school (eons ago) said they could appear due to too much acid in ones system or surface ulsers caused by ones nerves. Topicals provide some temporary relief, but it's best to treat the cause not the symptom. The answer for me was in the local health food store...Stressed Out, by Vita Logic. Good luck to you.

I also suffer from canker sores myself, and a Dr recommend that I take Garlic supplements and Vitamin C with rosehips. I wish I could remember the exact dosage but just follow the recommended ones on the bottle. It was amazing how fast they healed. I hope this helps.

Plain yogurt! Hold a mouthful of plain yogurt in the area where the sore is until it dissolves. Do this several times a day. Always works for me.

Hi K.:

You could possibly try eating yogurt and bananas.....yogurt with the live culture will help and bananas are high in potassium which is what your body my be needing.

Maybe call a local vitamin/nutritional store and see what they recommend too.

I get them too - and they are no fun :-( What I found that works great for me is swishing a few tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide around in my mouth, concentrating on the affected area, and then I spit it out. I repeat that process at least 2-3 times a day and the sores disappear pretty quickly - much faster than anything else I've tried. The peroxide does not sting, but the 'bubbling & foaming' that occurs is a bit of a nuisance... I just rinse my mouth with a few more tablespoons of water - but not too much because I don't want to wash the peroxide away from the sores. Give it a try - I'd be interested to know if it works for you.

OOOOH...I feel your pain...I get canker sores all the time and they are the worst!! Things that help me are using Rembrandt's canker sore toothpaste...expensive, but it does help. Also...if you have a canker sore and brush your teeth with it it doesn't hurt. I also have found that (for me) chewing gum is an aggravant to me getting canker sores...so I basically don't chew gum anymore - not sure if that applies to you or not.

My son gets mouth ulcers alot and the doctor recommended rinsing with an extra-strength antacid such as Mylanta concentrating on the affected area. That works really well for him.

Hi K.,

I also suffered from chronic canker sores, starting about 4 months after my son was born. They would last ten excruciating days, often getting infected (as mouth sores tend to do). Nothing really stopped them until I talked to a homeopathic practitioner. She took an account of ALL my symptoms and prescribed a homeopathic remedy. . . Homeopathy works with your body to solve the root problem, not just mask the symptoms. Its pretty complex, so its best to consult a practioner/expert rather than attempting self-prescription. Remedies come in either a tiny sugar tab that dissolves in your mouth or as a liquid that you would take one drop of each day. . . After a year of having a new mouth sore every month, I'm thankful to say I've been without them for probably 4 months.

I know homeopathy is a little off the beaten path, but its been around for a long, long time. And, used correctly (with the help of experiences pros), doesn't generally have the side effects that come with Western medical approaches.

Feel free to contact me if you'd like more information.

Best wishes,
Ray

I have a close friend who had chronic HORRIBLE canker sores that doctors told her she could do nothing about. She went to see somone in alternative medicine in St. Cloud who did MUSCLE TESTING for allergies. They told her she was allergic to dairy. She cut out ALL dairy, including breads with dairy, chocolate, etc. The canker sores went away. Her M.D. told her that she was crazy because canker sores or cold sores come from a virus not an allergy and all tests that the M.D. did came up negative for dairy allergy. Of course, every time she ate any dairy, she would get a canker sore. When she got married she broke out in sores from kissing her husband (they didn't kiss before they got married) so he had to quit eating dairy as well. Her case was rather extreme, but you may want to consider MUSCLE testing for any allergies. M.D.'s sometimes can think too much inside the box.

Another option would definatly be checking out a homeopathic practitioner. There is a really good one in Litchfield - Julie Holmgren, and the only one I know of in St. Cloud is Virginia Ruprecht (She operates her business out of her home).

K.-

I am a dental hygienist and often if it is not food related, stress, or illness related you need to look at the products you are using to keep your mouth clean. There is an ingrediant called "Sodium lauryl sulfate" which is in virtually every toothpaste product on the market but a select few. This is the ingrediant that causes your toothpaste to foam up when you are brushing. (You can also find this ingrediant in your shampoo's). Anyway, it is also linked to causing painful canker sores for certain people almost like an allergy to the ingrediant. I have a few patients that I have recommended to use.....Biotene(geared toward patients who suffer from a dry mouth), there is also a new paste on the market that is drawing a blank for me right now but it is for patients who suffer from frequent canker sores.

When you use these products they will not foam up like the current toothpaste you are using but my patients have all found relief from frequent and very painful sores.

Also, if you have a bad sore that is keeping you from eating, call your dentist there is a cauterizing product that only he or she can apply. We use it when ever a patient has a sore inside the mouth. It hurts like hell for a few seconds but then it completely takes the pain away and the sore heals.

Good luck and I hope that this helps.

Sincerely
J.
