We have one made by Mr. Coffee. It's a single serving model, meaning it only holds enough water for one cup of coffee. It works well and if I recall it was less expensive than the Keurig brand machines.
Besides a Keurig, what's a good inexpensive k-cup coffee maker? Just something small for college student.

My nephew started college this past Fall. He doesn't drink coffee, but loves tea. We went shopping and found a lot of choices.
I would suggest that you go to Target or Wal-Mart and look around to see what works for your kid. Each offers something different.
Good luck!
how much room does this college student have in his/her room?
what's the access to water for this student? Will he/she have to walk down the hall with a container to fill or is there a private bathroom in their dorm room?
If not a lot of room and access to water - The Hamilton Beach Single Serve is great.

The Black and Decker single serve is another option

You can purchase a pod to put in Keurig so you aren't limited to the K-Cup coffee...
Good luck!
Keurig is the main player in the K-cup coffee market, but another option is an instant hot tap added to your sink. We got one at costco for under $150, installed it ourselves with minimal effort, and now can make coffees and teas instantly without the cost of k-cups.
I hope you find what you are looking for!
I bought a Toastmaster brand from Dollar General and it works GREAT!
If the student only rarely has a single cup, then Kcup type is a good option if they don't want to go to the cafe.
If the student is a regular coffee drinker, a 4-10-or-12 cup maker is the better option. Single cup size makers are not that much, if any, smaller and k-cups would be a waste of time and money if the student likes bigger amounts.
Before you purchase this ask if he/she likes K-cup coffee. I know this is a new trend and a lot of people like these coffee makers. I hate them. The coffee is disgusting and weak, I am a coffee drinker but I like my coffee strong and bold.
When offered a cup of this coffee I decline and drink water or bring my own.
If someone gave this to me as a gift I would return it for something I would actually use.
