My company has been nothing but nice to me letting me change up my schedule all the time. Its really bad to the point that I basically e-mail out my monthly schedule so they know all my comings and goings. my son has required a lot of therapy over the years and testing. Hes had late start with school. 2 hour snow delays don't help plus all my doctors visits. Since he now gets on the bus earlier I asked to switch my hours to be 7:30-3:30. I was working 9-5 but now by the time I get home, make dinner, do dishes and pack lunches its 9:00 already which leaves me an hour to have any time with my son. I wouldn't be coming and going as much because a lot of stuff could be scheduled later in the day. I've always made up my time and even worked over time without taking the pay.

Is it wrong of me to ask them to switch my hours to something earlier?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I am temporaril working 7:30-3:30 for the next two months. If the MailDat person doesn't call at 4:30 much, then I get to keep my new hours. I work with Mail.
There is definitely a huge difference leaving at 3:30: I"ve seen a lot of accidents, less traffic, time to play with my son where before we had no time to play. leaving at 5:00 meant an hour to get home with bumper to bumper stop and go traffic.

most companies would rather have a happy employee than an unhappy one...if the company can do flex time - go for it...the worst they can do is say no...

I would ensure that my job gets done and that no one needs to take up the slack because of my hours...but I don't think you need to worry about that - you have said that you make up your time! :)

Communication is key - tell them what you need and what you will do for them!!

if they are understanding and it is not creating a burden then I dont think it is wrong. if it seems like they are only accomadating to you or it is creating a conflict then maybe. but i would still ask, you never know.

If they've been understanding in the past, I don't see why you couldn't ask. The worst they could say is no, right? And chances are, if you are a good employee and get your work done, they won't care what time of day it happens.

It's not wrong at all to ask for a change.

I really wish we had more employers that understood that the clock doesn't matter at all, doing your job does.

My employer lets us have a flex schedule so long as our job can be done within the hours we want. Some of us work with insurance companies that don't open until 8 so they can't come in before 8 stuff like that. Like me, I can come in as early as five and leave as late as 8 in the evening, but no one depends on my work product on a daily basis.

I guess I don't see why you are even worried.

I would think carefully before asking. It may just be one request too many. A lot of us would like to personalize our schedules but can't. It's great that your company has been so flexible and undersanding, but there are lots of unemployed people looking for work now, and unless you are a highly specialized skilled worker, you could be replaced with someone whose schedule is more flexble for the company.

It's hard to say without knowing the company or what you do. Also, is it a Christian company or is the boss a Christian? That could be the reason why they have been so accomodating in helping you get your son to therapy. Is there anyone else there that would know better how your request would be taken before actually talking to the boss?

Good luck and let us know how it turns out!

No. I don't think that's it wrong to ask. However, before you do you should just take into consideration how does this effect your coworkers and what your response will be if they say no.

Its not wrong to ask, but be careful about how many times you ask for these types of things. See how your boss is feeling first! :)
