Just for Fun - Signs of a Future Talent/career

Throughout most of my childhood I was obsessed with houses and always trying to open up the walls, get into basements or attics where I was sure I would find treasure, magic slides, etc. As an adult I have become an architectural historian and my job is to figure out how houses were built and changed by poking around in attics, crawl spaces, etc. Never found that treasure or magic slide though - lol.
My husband would get in trouble on a regular basis as a kid for dismantling the tv, radio, kitchen appliances, etc. He would take them apart to try to figure out how they worked. He is now an electrical engineer.
Now we look at our girls - an almost 1 year old and an almost 3 year old - and joke about possible signs of future talents and career choices. Nothing has yet appeared expect that our oldest has inherited our complete lack of athletic ability but manages to find gaps in any argument and so may make an excellant lawyer someday.
How about you? Did you show any signs of a future talent/career at a young age? Have your kids done anything that makes you think they are headed for a certain calling in life?

What can I do next?

i still don't know what i want to be when i grow up.
i went to battle with the local board of ed who insisted that my older son take music because the public school kids were at that age. he had zero interest and i didn't want to cause him to hate it by forcing it on him (we ended up having him write a paper on mozart's life.) now he's a jazz performance major at towson.
apparently i'm terrible at career prognostication.

I hope not! My oldest likes to swing on poles and stripping down to her underwear! HAHAHA

Her newest kick is that she wants to be an astronaut. Last year it was a pediatrician. The year before that the Octomom (ok not her but she wanted 10 kids).

The youngest will either have to be a soccer, basketball, field hockey, golfer or something with destroying other people's things. Wrecking ball crew chief maybe?

As for me I'm still waiting to grow up and become a lawyer, or a teacher, or a nurse...then again as a mom I'm always teaching, healing boo-boos and laying down the law. :-)

Good question!

We joke that our second is going to be president (or at the least, a politician) someday. From a young age, he has gravitated toward large groups of people who he then tries to direct. He schmoozes, literally kisses babies, pays frequent and random compliments to strangers and people he knows alike, and when he performs in a school program, he stands there waving at everyone throughout the performance as though they are there to see him personally. I don't know what he'd be like in office, but he'll be a great campaigner :D

When I was little I was REALLY into animals. I would read any book I could find about them. I wanted to be a vet.
Well that never happened, but now I have a lot of useless information about animals. haha I guess there is still time if i felt like it.

As for my kids. I can't really say about my 8month old. Except I KNOW she is going to be trouble. She inherited her father's eyes. They are Dangerous!! I know...My husband got me with them haha

My son, who is 2, is obsessed with Dinosaurs. Its really amazing actually. You can point to a dinosaur and he will tell you exactly what kind it is, what it eats, etc
I was on skype with my sister once, and my son was showing her his Dinosaurs, I said "It's a flying dinosaur"
My 2 y/os reply "that's not a dinosaur mommy, its a pterasuar" Ya know the flyers are apparently called pterasuars haha
Or I will say, "wow what a cool T-Rex"
My son says "That's not a T-rex mommy, that's a cryolophosaurus"
Maybe he will be a paleontologist??

I love it, its really amazing.

my daughter whose 4 say she wants to be an astronaut paleontoligist that dresses like spiderman and sings like Michael Jackson.....very specific...haha, she either wants to do both or find alien dinosaur bones
Shes always had a love for space
BUT
I think she'll be an English teacher.....she's been correcting adults and kids grammar since she was 2, and has always had a great ability to understand and commuicate (no toddler slur and there have only been a select few words she has trouble pronouncing and shes well aware of it, she will tell M., I know I can't say this word correctly J. yet...), teachers have said they think she's verbally gifted

Jen F...my six year old daughter is the same way...verbally gifted. She was speaking full on correct sentences at 18 months and it drives her batty when the kids at school use "baby" words! She's been told by the kids at school she's "weird" and she says "it's only because I use words that they do not understand"....

To answer the actual question...I believe my daughter will either be a Marine Bioligist or Lawyer. She is crazy about all animals, things to do with water. But she too can find a loop hole and argue about anything.

My son, however, I'm not so sure about right now...

With my son I can *almost* guarantee you what he'll "be" when he grows up:

- law enforcement (police, federal, etc.)
- journalist

From the time he was VERY small (2ish) he has been absolutely INTENT on what other people are doing, and if they are doing it "correctly". It's been an ongoing issue particularly in school & classes... but it's in every area of his life (from people driving, to parenting, to examining laws/rules to see if THEY are 'just' in his opinion).

He's never had a fascination with police officers/law enforcement/journalists (aka isn't dressing up for halloween or keen to be)... it's just the way he is.

At 8 he currently wants to be a US Marine, Pilot, Video Game Designer, Farmer, Restaurant Worker, Actor. But I have $50 on the table with my mom as to whether he'll go into law or journalism eventually. Either just FITS him.

Nope.
I have an IT career that didn't even exist when I was growing up.
I've know people who certainly had talent, but they had no drive or ambition to do anything with it. And I've known people who've tried and failed several careers before finding one that worked best for them - they had the drive to keep looking and trying.
Like the sign in my son's band leaders classroom says - practice, practice, practice will over-ride an un-applied natural talent every time.

We've been saying our son who is now 6 is going to be one heck of a defense attorney. The kid will argue anything and everything and usually he has a valid point to his arguements. He is really good at baseball too, he kept arguing with the coach that he didn't need the tee but had to use it during t-ball. He is one big hitter too! My daughter on the other hand will be something special. I haven't pin pointed it out yet but what ever she does she does it very well. I guess she could be a gymnast or a x-gamer the way she flies off my couch and flips everywhere. She is 4.

Even if you think you've figured it out, they go off and find another talent.
Both of my children are excellent musicians - but they want to do other things with their lives. They've done many activities and were good at all of them.
My son is an excellent jazz saxophonist who will be majoring in Chemistry in college this fall. He is a talented chemistry student and finds the whole Chemistry thing simple -- he obviously didn't get that from me! He started ringing bells at 6 and piano at almost 7. He took up the sax in 4th grade. He was an amazing pianist, but gave it up in the 6th grade when we moved. It's a gift, but not one he wants to pursue full time... We often thought he'd be a lawyer because he's very good with words. He writes well. He researches well. He can remember anything! Alas, we were incorrect... although, there is still time!
My daughter started ringing bells at the age of 3, piano at 5, and trumpet at 9. She understands music theory - she finds it simple. She is an amazing trumpet player! She'd love to minor in music, but not major in it. She is also a very talented Mathematics student and plans to study Math at college. FYI: Her 4th grade math teacher told me that she was a terrible math student (I knew she was bored) -- obviously her 4th grade math teacher was delusional! (Her 5th grade math teacher saw immediately that she had an aptitude for math and re-instilled that love for numbers!) She is also an avid reader. That said, she can't spell and hates to write. We KNOW she'll NEVER be a writer! The world is her oyster... whatever she chooses to do is fine with me as long as she is happy.
Whatever they do is fine with me.
As long as they can keep me (in my old age...) in the manner to which I have become accustomed, of course!

Wellllll.. only time will tell.

Our son was (and is) extremely talented at dressing up as characters from movies he likes, and acting out parts of the movies, and remembering his favorite lines from the movies. Since he was about 3 yrs old. LOL However, he is also very uncomfortable with people watching him. So he probably won't be an actor. Perhaps he'll end up with a career as a set designer or something along those lines--something behind the scenes?

Our daughter, says that she wants to be a pilot and astronaut. But as a young child she was petrified of being tossed in the air. She freaked out and clung to you like a cat clinging to avoid a bath.

Soooo..... I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I work in the Texas Oil & Gas industry. For a girl who grew up in Illinois, I'm positive my parents didn't see that coming!

As for my daughters, my oldest is very witty, charming, funny, and intelligent. She is also a great humanitarian. She is more empathetic than I have ever seen a child be. I think she would make a wonderful teacher.

My younger daughter could not care less about academia, is a child of few words, and loves to build, taking things apart, and fix the car with Daddy. I think she might lean towards engineering or something to that effect.

What a fun question!

My daughter is VERY caring and kind especially to other kids or animals. She hates to see anyone get hurt and is the 1st one running over to help an injured child and is really sensitive to others feelings. So perhaps she will be a doctor/nurse or veterinarian.

I am in IT, so not much of that when I was growing up. lol. I was always really organised though and loved putting things into some kind of order and reading. I maybe should have been a librarian!! I would love that, my 2 favorite things = quiet & books. :-)

Well, we have 3 kids (7, 3, and 18 months) and I really can't say that I've ever noticed or connected what they were doing with what they might do. I will be paying closer attention, though! Very interesting. I can say that it is a little easier for me to see this with my oldest son. He has always loved animals and had a gentle touch, and I truly believe that he could be a great veterinarian if he wanted to. But, he has also expressed to me before that he would enjoy being a dentist. So we'll see. I kind of vote for the dentist!

On another note.... what a cool job you have!! I I would have loved something like that. I am so very interested in old homes and their architecture and stories. We actually live in an 1800's farmhouse in Berryville and I have been researching the families and the farm's history. This area is so great for old homes, I could just drive around for hours looking at old houses.

Fun, fun!

My husband tells me he was always a numbers kid. He could figure out formulas and numbers very easily. He is now an operations manager for a major investment company. He works with billions every day! When I was younger I always loved working with kids and helping people. I wanted to be a school teacher, but unfortunately I had a boyfriend who wanted to control what I did and hated the idea of me going away to college and kept me close to home (he is WAY out of my life now - life lesson learned). So, my dream of being a teacher did not pan out. Before I was a mom, I had a career with a major corporation. I was responsible for getting product to our military in overseas locations. Then after becoming a mom I sat on the board of directors for a private school with the position of fund raising. I also was a Girl Scout leader. I was and now will be again the leader for VBS crafts at our church. I still love kids and helping people!!!

Yes!...My youngest. At first she is a little shy, or distant. Then once she becomes comfortable with a person she will uniquely tap into what makes them laugh. Then she will proceed to "own them" comically. Ive seen grown men and women laughing in tears. I will be honestly surprised if she doesnt grow up and do something in the comedy/entertainment biz.
