Sometimes, I get really down on the fact that I feel like we live in a shoebox, and an overstuffed one, at that.
But then, reality sinks in, and I am abundantly thankful that we have a nice, albeit small, home to live in, and I get to brainstorming about how I might de-clutter to create more space.
Anyhow, I got to wondering what size homes other people live in and make it work.
Our current home is about 800 square feet (it was originally built as a small apartment for me, a single 20-something), but now houses me, my husband, my 5 year old son, and soon to be infant. We will be moving, hopefully late this fall, into a 2300 square foot home, which will feel like a palace to us, but for now, we're staying cozy in our little abode.
So, how many people live in your household? And how many square feet do you call 'home'??
6 people(3 adults, 3 children)one cat and a fish...plus any of my neighbors at any given time of the day..... almost less then 1000 square feet.
One bath room.
The bathroom issue is the only thing I would change...I just need a toilet with walls.....nothing fancy.
It sucks being the only girl...when you have two grown men getting showered in the morning...and you have to pee...or poop....and outside for either is just annoying and gross.....At least the guys can go outside and pee if need be, when I am showering....I sit and hold it....or go to the neighbors:)

Bought our 1st house in 1989, 1300 sq feet, 3 bed 1 bath.
Then had three babies rapidfire. Built a new house in 2004, 2900 sq ft, 5 bedrooms, 3 full baths, full basement with 11 foot ceilings, on an acre. I know you probably don't want to hear this, but that house was TOO BIG FOR US. I had empty cabinets, empty closets everywhere, sometimes I couldn't find my kids, someone yelling for mom from upstairs had to take a damn bus to get there. I am also uncomfortable with, um, spendy things, I actually was embarassed to tell people where our new house was since the neighborhood was so high end, strangest thing.
But wait, THEN I left my abusive drunken husband, sold Barbie's Dream House, made a FORTUNE, with which I bought a nice manageable townhouse, same school district as the giant house, 1700 sq ft, 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, and it was just right (am I freaking Goldilocks, or what?) for me and my three kids.
Course then the guy moved in and all that GUY STUFF.....but, one kid is already away at school, next one goes next year....sigh.
Bigger is not always better.

We have 2100 sq ft, ranch with a full basement so not too bad. At one point we had six living there but my older two have moved to their own places so we are back down to four.
A kinda funny story, my ex in laws moved into a 6,800 sq ft home just after two of their four got married so four people in this home. My ex mother in law said I will never have a junk drawer again!!! I laughed at her and said everyone has a junk drawer. There is just junk that has no other place to put it. She disagreed, she now has six junk drawers in her kitchen alone. :p

Our daughter is now in college, so she is only home for a few months a year. We live in a 2 bdrm 1 bath home that is about 900 sq ft.
The kitchen is only 12 sq feet.
There were times I was so put out, but in the long run, it has been just fine. What helped is that we spent a ton of time outside in our front and back yard.. The weather in the winters is so mild..
I have so many friends and family with huge homes and they do not even know where they all are many times. They use their cell phones to call to each other inside their homes!
I do not think 2 kids, me and my husband could live here comfortably, especially if they were many years apart or different sexes.. That would have been a deal breaker.
Congratulations on your new baby and new home!

We moved from a 1300 sqft to a 3500 sqft, and let me tell you - I miss that little house all the time! We have 4 people under my roof and the entire upstairs is used for guests. I do love my new home, but it is a bear to keep clean and the yard is 4x as big. It takes a LOT more time keeping everything clean and tidy. Plus, I thought we would have enough furniture to furnish the new house, but I was wrong! We're still saving for rugs and other accent furniture to take up the blank spaces! We live on 1.5 acres, so the privacy is nice, but I do miss the smaller neighborhood charm. :) Hang in there!

It's TINY. A single pair of shoes in the living room makes it look like a disaster.
I have MAJOR plans for this house. It's on a double lot (in the city, practically unheard of). I'm going to bump it back, doubling the sqfootage (adding a master suite, and laundry, and office/bedroom to the 2 bedrooms upstairs turning it into a 4b/2ba, and add an attached 1 1/2 story garage. We'll still have a huge yard, and we back up on greenspace. A 100k investment into building can conservatively net a 300-400k return
I feel so sad for my poor little house. It's an "add on" house that was designed for a young couple starting out and then was designed to be added onto as the couple started their family. Well, the first owners died childless, and then the 2nd owners turned it into a rental during the depression and it's been a rental ever since (until we bought it a couple years ago). The house NEEDS to reach it's potential. It's been waiting for over 100 years.
And, quite frankly, I really need the space!
It's going to have to wait a few more years, though. I need to finish school and be working for 2 years before I'll have the money to build.

My husband, four kids and myself all live in 1700 square feet. For a time we were living in just the upstares which is 900 because of flooding issues in the area. It was tight but we managed. We had thought about moving into a house with more space since a ton of our stuff was already packed, but we just don't want to deal with the added expense. I like our tiny house payment. When it was safe to move our things back to the basement we realized that we could better organize and have been thrilled with all the ideas we have come up with. I have also used this chance to get rid of a ton of stuff. I must have loaded several pickup loads. I feels good to get unused stuff our of our home!!

I think ours is about 1400 sq ft?? It's five bedrooms though - but the kids rooms are tiny, like 8x10 or 10x10.....ours is ok and has two closests. Our room and kids 2 rooms are upstairs -then 2 more downstairs, one used for home office, other is a small playroom off of the living room (again, about 8x10). It can be tight at times.....thankfully we have a basement for storage and our living room and kitchen area is decent size. Big problem is that we only have one bathroom and it's on the main floor......We tried to sell our home and get a bigger one, but no one bought it :( so this last week we took it off the market and went out and bought a motorhome instead!!!! So excited in that choice! We'll raise our kids in a smaller home, but with lots of memories!!!!

We have 3 very under-utilized rooms:
*formal living room
*formal dining room
*spa room that the previous owners built off the kitchen--so odd! We can't use the hot tub for fear of our kids drowning, so it has been empty for 5 years
So, we actually USE probably closer to 1500sf.

we just moved into a 1050 sq. foot home (3 bedrooms, 2 baths) from an 800 sq. foot condo (2 bedrooms, 2.5 baths). The condo was perfect when it was just my husband and I--actually it was even perfect when our first child was an infant too. Then he became a toddler, then we had another baby and they could NOT sleep in the same room together (they would wake each other up all night) and the baby was sleeping in a pack 'n play in our walk-in closet where she couldn't see/smell me (because then she was literally up ALL night wanting to hang out). Our new place is beyond perfect for us--it's a rancher with a HUGE yard and a very open floor plan. My baby girl finally has her own room and started sleeping through the night the second she had her own space. AND my husband and I can actually move around in our room at night without waking somebody up :)

Ours is 1100 sq ft. We do have a basement and garage that are not included in that number though and that's a huge difference because we are able to store things outside of our living area. There are 6 of us - 3 bedrooms with 2 kids per bedroom.
Our old house was 868 sq feet with no attic, garage, or usable basement. All 6 of us lived there when we moved. We had three kids in one bedroom (a raise bunkbed with a trundle and a crib) and our newborn in our room, sleeping with us or in his car seat. Yeah, we were cozy!
I'm actually comfortable in our house. We do need to somehow come up with another bedroom because our step-daughter lives with us FT now and she and my son share a room. They're 13 and that's just too old. I would love to put on a 2nd floor and one day have a dining room that seats 20 for holiday dinners, but we manage. A second floor would put us at 2400 sq ft, which would be heaven. But if we never get there and get to put our kids through college and retire instead, that would be fine too.

My husband and baby and I aren't cramped, but we could definitely benefit from being more organized and even having more space. We've got more than 3300, but we're using bedrooms and other rooms for storage. We'd love to have our space redefined a bit, like larger closets and master. (Oh, forgot about 17yoSS. As I have said here many times...we have moved a lot....33 times in my life, 17 times with kids.
Our current home is probably 6000 sq ft. BUT it is not very functional. I hate the kitchen. I like the kitchen in my small RV better than this thing I use now. This current home is a big view home with huge picture windows, meaning very little wall space to place furniture or art. It has 6 BR, 4 BA, 2 LV, 2 DR and I know for a fact that we spend the majority of our time in just less than a 1,000 sq ft.
My favorite home over the years was a 3 BR, 2 BA, split level home with a bright, happy, user-friendly kitchen where we could fit many people. I would live forever in that house, with just the addition of a guestroom and an office for hubs.
I don't think size matter as much as how functional the space is laid out.

We live in 1500sf and there are 6 of us. One bedroom for my only daughter is more of a closet. We rent and was the only thing affordable that would fit us but it is way too small for us. It's much smaller than the base housing we had before. It's harder now too having a landlord that works at his own pace and feels if you put lipstick on a pig that it works just fine. Blah. We're hoping to buy in the spring. We need at least 2000sf, or at least an unfinished basement that we can use to make a bedroom down there for the teen. The rooms here are not proportioned correctly. The kitchen and bathroom are huge and actually a waste of space. The living room/dining room are tiny because the kitchen and bathroom take up too much space. Two bedrooms downstairs but the boys room has no closet which makes for a mess with spare clothes and had to buy a hanging rack which is a mess. Two bedroom upstairs but my daughter's room is a closet, more meant for a workout room or office, just enough to squeeze in a bed and dresser at the foot. My son's room up there is huge! Don't understand why the space wasn't more evened out. There is a bathroom up there so only 2 full baths for 6 which is ok but would be better if we had 3 or at least 2.5, lol. Our oldest son came to visit with his wife and daughter and didn't understand our complaints. He thought the house would be fine for him, his wife and a 3 year old. Well, of course it would! But we're bumping into each other with 2 adults, a 16 year old and 6 year old triplets! *sigh*

You have a great attitude..keep it up! Home is not about the walls or the space..it is about how you feel when you are in your home and that everyone is happy and loved. We are just as happy now as when we were living in our tiny apt. Over time your living space may increase but the joy and happiness does not always follow suit.

I know you didn't ask, but Ikea has great ideas for storage (think vertical) and furniture arranging for small spaces. Their latest catalog deals with small living spaces specifically.
We're 5 people, 3 cats, 2 birds, 3 lizards and 3 fish tanks (1 is 75 Gallons) living in a 1300 sq. ft raised-ranch house. We have 3 full bathrooms, but only one shower is functional at the moment. Two of my daughters share a room (we did loft beds with desks underneath).
I wasn't "born organized" so our house tends to be cluttered. I keep on top of it as best as I can.

Before kids we lived in a tiny one room cabin in Alaska but that was like a fun adventure at the time. Honestly, I would like my house to be slightly smaller than it is now bc it would feel more homey and there is less to clean. But overall I do like my house a lot and feel very lucky. I love that we have 4 bedrooms (one guest bedroom and each kid gets their own room) - very luxurious!

When I married at 30, my husband and I had a 3 bedroom manufactured home built when I was preggo with our first child. In 2003, we moved to AZ to a huge 3000sf 5 bedroom home with a pool. Awesome! But I lost it in the divorce...ugh...My hubby and I now live in a rental with our 3 kids. Its 4 bedroom, just under 2000sf. I definately miss that extra 1000 sf!!!! I do like our layout and its single story, everyone has their own room and we have a family and living room but we really need more space as the 2 youngest are preteens so we will need to spread out. Hope to be able to buy again in the next couple years and will not consider anything less than 2500 sf!

Bigger home has a very spacious kitchen and main living room (combined dining) the 3 bedrooms and extra living room are tiny with pathetic closets. The use of space was not for us. My smaller house has a yard 3 times bigger, much larger rooms and closets, and even though it has a tiny kitchen its living rooms are of equal size which fits us to a T.
My point is that space can work differently for different families.

We lived in a home about that size for a number of years (4 of us in about 1000 sq ft) the kids shared a bedroom - when the trundle was pulled out the door couldn't open all the way. We tried to spend time in all of the rooms (read books in the kids room, sit on mom & dad's king size bed to play with toys, hallway floor for listening to books on tape (in the days of cassettes), living room for rough-housing, TV watching, etc. It makes it feel like you have more house than you do. When we got rid of the upstairs apartment and gained 2 bedrooms, then finished the basement it felt like we lived in a mansion... we had all this room to spread out over! Now, 7 years later it feels small again, but we probably own too much stuff!

When our daughter was born we lived in a 625-650 sq. ft apartment. TTIIINNNNYYYY. You also have to take in account he had lived in that apartment as a single man for 10 years, then I come along with all of my household things (I was married before and had everything for a house), then all the baby stuff! It was cramped, but I made it all fit.
We moved a year later into our house which is about 1200 sq. ft. of living space. Ahhhhhh space (we also have a big backyard). There is 3 of us, 2 adults and 1 toddler. It's 3 bedrooms, and 1 bath. Luckily we have space to add on....we need another bathroom!
Funny thing is, I was more creative storing everything in the tiny apartment than I am storing it in the big house. I find myself running out of space here, and we even downsized when we moved and got rid of stuff!

Bedrooms are very small and tight. The 2nd master as a guest room because we live far away from EVERYONE and want guests to be comfortable since they'd stay at least a week to justify the trip, and also because we think that someday my mom may move in (she's getting older, and no money saved). It seems very small at times, but thankful when it is time to clean. and when it is time to heat it. We looked at bigger houses, on smaller lots and decided we would rather have our kids outside with room to run and explore then sitting in a big LR looking at a big TV. So we have 5 acres of woods for them to roam-- and I am very thankful for that and having a roof over our heads!
The lack of space prevents me from being a pack rat- and I force myself to throw things out!

We have about 4000 square feet, (including a weird basement, which counts, according to the tax people, but isn't really usable as living space) and honestly, I think the number doesn't matter so much as how you use it. Ours is spread out over 4 stories, and with a little one, you can only be where they are. You can be stuffed in 4000 square feet or be comfortable in 1200. (800 is pretty small, IMHO). Ruthlessly decluttering and being organized is key regardless. When we moved into our first home (about 1400 sq feet) we had 2 totally empty rooms... by the time we moved out, we were stuffed! Stuff expands to fill the space, so that is a challenge for everyone, I think.

Four people in an 1100 square foot house. Nice sized living room, too narrow eating/kitchen area (in my opinion). Hall closet is our 'panty' and I hate that! Two bathrooms (which was one of the selling factors for us). Kids share a bedroom - probably 10x10. One twin and one crib. Both twins will fit in there but it will be cramped. The only toys/books they have in there have to fit under their bed!! Tiny closet as well. The master bedroom is a nice size with a walk in closet and the 2nd bathroom. We have a basement with hubby's 'man cave' and then in the unfinished portion of our basement we have the kids play area (with those rubberized mats from Sam's Club) and my scrapbook/wrapping table. Laundry is down there, too as well as all of our holiday stuff and baby clothes/baby stuff. We live on 1.25 acres with one house next to us (vacant) then are surrounded by cornfields!!! Most of the yard is fenced in (another huge bonus for us!) and we have a one car attached garage and 2.5 car detached barn.
I love this house but sadly it will NOT last with us because we want 1 if not 2 more kids. My dream would be to convert the garage (which we will do if we have another kid before the economy makes it easier to sell) and then in the future add on another bedroom (since the one the kids have is really tiny). We'd still potentially have all the kids sharing (2 per room) and use their current bedroom as an office or scrapbooking room. I also want a larger kitchen. We have lots of family and friends close by and I want 5-10 people to be able to be in our kitchen (at the table/around the island) comfortably!!!
It's all brick which I love and am super thankful for when there are bad storms!!!

We just moved into my girlfriends house. It's huge! But before that we were living in a 1,049 square foot house. Myself, my husband, my 9 year old, my 6 year old, my baby and the dog. it was tight! We did have a HUGE backyard that helped make up for it though.
Now we are in a 3,200 sf house...but we are not paying for it. We are just taking care of it until they move back. It's gonna suck when we have to move back to what we can afford. :)

We live in a 1200 sqft home. I was raised in a 900 sqft home though. My husband and I, and our two boys live here. The house isn't big, but it is definitely do-able for us.
With small space, we definitely have to keep it simple or the house will look 'too busy' with things. I like space. I hope one day we'll get to move into a little bigger house. Of course if the economy gets any better. lol If the economy doesn't get better and if we still can't find a job, we'll have all the streets to call home. lol Not really funny, but I have to keep a little humor or I'm going to go nuts.

We are a family of five...two adults, one 13 year old and twin 6 year olds...we left a 2000 sqft house in Texas last year and moved into a 3500 sqft house just outside of Orlando (got a SCREAMING good deal because like CA, FL has taken a huge hit in the housing market). Anyway, the extra space is nice but one thing I didn't see people mention when I scanned through the answers is how the cost of the utilities goes up when the space gets bigger. Granted we do have a pool that requires 8 hours a day of pool pump running, I was blindsided by the power bill the other day....$489!!!! We keep the downstairs on 78 and the upstairs on 80 and it was still sky high. Makes me kind of miss my smaller house just for that reason alone. Even if we could sell tomorrow and buy something bigger, I don't think I could handle it. What used to take me one day to clean (whole house end to end) now takes me two...it's definitely more work. Best wishes on your move and enjoy all your new extra space :-)

We live in about 1400sq ft there are 7 of us. it's a four bd 2 bath and with 5 kids all the time and the other two visiting for summer and holidays it gets cramped fast. These are not small children either we have 16,13,11,11,7 then when the other two are here 20 and 19. It's horrible and i really hate my house! but we just have to stick it out for a couple more years then we can afford to move up and another one goes off to college. aaahhhh the space we will have. My parents are hoarders so i am not someone who keeps a lot of stuff around but with this many people there's no way to not have a mess and feel burried under the clutter!
