I am expecting baby #2 and want to research different pediatricians in the area. Currently, we go to Johnson County Pediatrics. I like our doctor, but am looking for a pedi who is more flexible and has a more natural approach to child health. I would really like to find a doctor who spreads out childhood immunizations, is pro-breastfeeding, etc. If anyone has any suggestions, please pass them along. I am delivering at Overland Park, so if they are affiliated with that hospital, it would be a big bonus. Thanks!

What can I do next?

We go to JOCO peds too. Our dr is very pro breastfeeeding (I have 2 kids). I've also spread out immunizations. Sometimes it's a little battle esp. w/ the nurses, but overall it hasn't been a huge deal. I have another friend that has 3 kids and has done the same thing. We see Dr Winburn. In addition, my 2nd born (8 mo. old) has several issues. Dr Winburn has recommended different doctors who do lots of "natural care". One of the doctors (PT) is Pam Carney ###-###-####, she's not a peditrician, but would be in addition too. Dr Gupta is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, who is really into the non-scientific treatments. Maybe he can recommend a peditrician? Dr Winburn has been exceptional to work with.

After I posted, I read the other comments. Dr Gupta mentioned Dr Donald Brooks as well. He is next on our list to call if our son continues to struggle w/ illness. Per Dr Gupta, Dr Brooks is a DO and is the best in KC. He does not take insurance.

I also go to Jo Co Ped., with my 2 kids. Our doctor is Dr. Winburn. I love her. She is very easy to work with and with 3 kids of her own, she's been there. One of her kids has special needs. So, if overall you like Jo Co Peds, I would try her.

I go to Pediatric Partners, which is in the doctor's building right behind OP Regional. They are fabulous!! I interviewed with them before having my first child, and I have enjoyed all of the doctor's there. My boss's daughter goes there and so do my coworker's sons. They are very friendly and give great tips and advice.

I actually had the same experience at JoCo Pediatrics--my doctor was very rigid, and although she was pro-breastfeeding, she was not at all easy to talk to about scheduling weaning, nap problems, or what have you. We now go to Dr. Rahto at College Park Family Care. We love having one doc for the whole family, and when we've seen other doctors because of an illness, they've all been great, too. Dr. Talbert and Dr. Curry are especially good with our son, along with Dr. Rahto. CPFC employs a nutritionist to help you learn about alternative therapies, and they also have allergists and other specialists on staff so if you need someone else, you have a good chance of reaching someone who will work with your doctor. If you're at all interested in a good Family Practitioner, these guys can't be beat! Dr. Rahto does have privileges at OP Regional, so I assume many of the other docs do, too. I really don't think you can go wrong there!

I was surprised by how few pediatricians have a holistic approach to raising children! My midwife spoke highly of Dr. Douglas Brooks at Covenant Healthcare (a branch of college park). However, he is a family practitioner, not a pediatrician. I have been very pleased with him and everyone I talk to speaks highly of him. He does not deliver babies though...he used to, but doesn't anymore. The only downfalls I see with Dr. Brooks is that due to his popularity, he can be hard to see. Also, because of his more natural approach the answers he gives are not always black and white. Like when my son had a minor ear infection, he said to wait it out and see how he does (he said I could give him Tylenol and gave me some natural remedies like hot packs, etc. He also gave me a prescription, but told me not to use it unless my son's symptoms got worse). I'm used to Drs. prescribing medicine and that is it. Since his answer was more open-ended and put me more in control of my son's healthcare, at first I doubted him. But now, after several visits, I appreciate the kind of Dr. he is. I'm a type A personality and like for things to be spelled out, so I think that is why I doubted him at first. I would highly recommend Dr. Brooks. Good luck.

I refer my patientS to Dr. Douglas Brooks ###-###-####) and Dr. John Greenwood ###-###-####). They are both family physicians, and everyone who goes to them loves them. Personally, I take my daughter to Dr. Brooks, and he is very comfortable and supportive of alternate (or no) immunization schedules, pro-breastfeeding, pro-attachment parenting, etc. I also agree that it can be hard to get in to see him.

I have also heard good things about Dr. Riley ###-###-####), who is also a family physician.

I hope this helps, and congrats on the new addition!

Yours in health,
Dr. Alyssa
