Good question - always good to think of positive things!
We're starting to think of downsizing, and we did some major clean-out over the past 2 years, starting with things that are still in the packing boxes from when we bought this house decades ago! So we learned to deal with less, and it made us more appreciate of what we chose to keep.
We had a bunch of family over on Sunday night for an 8th night of Chanukah party, and I was just overwhelmed by the 7 different menorahs we all put on the living room windowsill. Between the candles on each one and the reflection of the bay window, it seemed that the room just filled with more and more light as each person lit more candles. We all just sat there taking in the sight, and I was struck by the blessings of family and close friends. For once I made just the right amount of food, so everyone was devouring what was made without me feeling I had to figure out what to do with 100 pounds of leftovers! Everyone pitched in, helping with drinks and passing of appetizers and so on - it was so communal!
We have a cousin with a 2.5 year old, and we don't have toddler toys - I asked a few neighbors if I could borrow some appropriate toys, and 2 people showed up with small bins of toys to share. Sometimes I'm struck by how much I try to do myself, instead of working with my wonderful neighbors. Note to self: reach out more.
Today I took an extra bag of potatoes and some other items to the food pantry. I even took some used lightbulbs (standard bulbs) left over after the energy saving people came in and replaced them with LED bulbs. I asked the food pantry supervisor if they were useful - for people who rent and who may not be "authorized" to call in the energy people, a light bulb can be a big expense. The pantry happily took them. As I looked at the families who "took a number" and were waiting to take home 2 grocery bags to feed a family for a week, I was struck by how very lucky I am.
We have a couple of bird feeders on a pole out back - today there was a beautiful cardinal sitting on one of them (rare, since cardinals normally are ground feeders). I stopped and just enjoyed him until he flew away. I have to remember to stop being so busy that I don't stop to smell the roses, or watch the clouds, or enjoy the sunset. I have eyes that see, ears that hear, a coat & gloves that keep me warm, and a house with a yard and a bird feeder. I am blessed.
