JFF: Pre-cooked bacon...modern Wonder or Crime Against Food?

One of my sisters is a raving fan of pre-cooked bacon. I was unaware that such a thing existed until I offered to pick a few things up at the grocery store a while ago and that was on her list. I had no idea where to find it. It's not even refrigerated!!

Anyway...the thought of this just skeeves me out. I have no idea how it tastes, because I won't even try it. Real bacon is so yummy when cooked fresh I can't imagine what needs to be done with it to make it able to sit on a shelf in a box. For me, this is right up there with other bizarre non-foods like Cool-Whip, Miracle Whip and cheese that sprays out of a can. Shudder.

So...what say you? Do you use pre-cooked bacon? Do you think it compares to fresh bacon? BTW I'm enjoying a nice bacon and egg sandwich right now and that's what got me thinking about this. Happy Friday!

What can I do next?

Total crime against food. I'm a vegetarian and still am nostalgic for the smell of bacon cooking. That's one whole, real part of it, right? Smelling the aroma of the bacon wafting in the kitchen and the mouthwatering drool of anticipation before that first bite.... the crisp crunch when you take that first bite. Eating food should be a whole sensory thing. The 'bacon in a box" sounds like convenience at the expense of the sensory experience.

It's criminal!! But then, that weird, paper-thin stuff labeled bacon in the grocery store is also a crime. You haven't lived until you've had some home-grown thick-sliced strips of heaven!

Modern wonder.

Trust me. When you're a US Soldier deployed to a primarily Muslim country, getting shelf-stable bacon in your care package ellicits angel song and happy dancing.

I have heard some people say it is good, but I just cannot bring myself to try it (or the packaged bacon bits). I get creeped out by "food" that doesn't ever go bad but seems like it should!

Crime against food. It's BACON. Bacon, people. How could someone bastardize it like that?

I was gonna say "Ew, no", but then I read Christy Lee's answer and thought "hmm...guess there's a place for everything."

Still don't think I'd buy it personally, though. It's just too easy to lay out a whole package of bacon on a jelly roll pan and bake it to perfection in the oven, no messy-frying-only-5-strips-at-a-time on the stove.

I don't eat pork or other meats, so I can't tell you how it compares, but I've gotta say this falls within the "Crimes Against Food" category.

It costs at least double what you pay for regular uncooked bacon. For me it's up there with pre-shredded cheese or pre-packaged salad. It'll do in a pinch if you really haven't got time, but generally a real big waste of money. The kind I tried was refrigerated and needed to be microwaved.

I can't bring myself to try it either. It simply can't be as good as the real deal.

(and thank you very much... now I'm obsessing over a BLT sandwich and may have to drive to the store to buy fresh tomatoes!)

I've tried it and it's OK. It's not as yummy as fresh cooked but it does still taste like bacon. The first time I tried it I didn't realize it was precooked and just thought it was a poorer quality of bacon. I like thick sliced applewood smoked bacon. Precooked is not thick sliced applewood smoked. LOL

The precooked was from the refrigerated section. I would use it in a pinch. Mostly I object to the price. Combine that with my love of sizzling bacon and the aroma that fills the kitchen and I don't buy it.

BTW: I cook my bacon on a paper towel over several sheets of newspaper and another paper towel over the top. It's done quickly with no skillet and stove top to clean. The best of both worlds.

JFF BTW the microwaveable kind is precooked.

Modern wonder!!! I thought the same thing and now I used it in recipes all the time. I don't usually cook it up for breakfast (it's not bad) but in baked beans or potato skins - it can't get any easier. Give it a try.

I tried it once, because I got it free. Never again, even if they paid me. It doesn't taste right.

I purchase the Hormel Bacon at Costco - it's not totally pre-cooked. Makes my life easier - MUST be kept cold or freeze. I still have to heat it in the microwave.

When camping - the pre-cooked is AWESOME protein and makes life VERY easy.

Otherwise? I like to fry my bacon.

The only pre cooked that I get are bacon bits. But not strips of bacon. That just sounds strange to me. I do like the microwavable kind though it's pretty taisty

I'm a little bit of a foodie and many years ago I used to be a vegetarian - bacon brought me back to the other side. I LOVE bacon as do my children. What's not to love about bacon?!

That said, normally I'm in the "crime against food" camp, but I have used it on occasion while camping. I would never eat precooked bacon alone or in a sandwich, just doesn't taste right, but buried in some eggs or a breakfast burrito it's not bad. In a moment of desperation or convenience I'll use it.
