We are having a cold snap right now. The current temperature is -43 degrees celcius (or -45 fahrenheit) with the windchill. (Without windchill it is only -29 celcius.) It looks like it will be this cold all week. School busses still run unless it hits -45c. My kids walked to school and home for lunch today, but they will probably have indoor recess all week. I feel sorry for the teachers! I've been inside all day so far because it is my day off, but the kids have swimming lessons tonight so I will have to go out later. We have had fairly mild winters for the past couple of years so we are a little spoiled, but this is really normal for our climate. So, what is it like where you are?
The cold is painful if you don't dress for it! I don't mind the cold weather and snow too much though. It is nice and sunny out. We are pretty fortunate that we don't have earthquakes, tsunami's, hurricaines, flash floods etc. We have had tornados, but I have never seen one. When we have a flood it just means your recroom carpet gets wet. We also don't have poisonous insects and snakes. I've never even seen a cocroach, except in the zoo. The cold weather is more of an inconvenience than anything else. I'm actually a couple hours north of Pembina, ND, but the temperature is probably pretty close. I would take too cold over too hot because at least I can dress warmer. If it is too hot you are stuck inside. We have the largest Icelandic population here outside of Iceland. In fact, I think our Icelandic population is bigger than the population of Iceland.
Swim lessons are at the Y, so the kids will play floor hockey and on the play structure for an hour or two after they get out of the pool. They will be good and dry by the time we leave and they get a chance to run around after being stuck inside all day! I do sort of want to stay home though!
Ours is a dry cold. That's a good thing.
What happens to the brains of teenagers? I did the same thing. Stopped wearing snwpants, parka, boots, hat and mitts. Wore runners and a hoodie all winter long, and complained about how cold it was. Duh!
Goodness, I would freeze to death!! It's supposed to be in the 60's and 70's all week. My kind of weather!! I agree with TF, I'd rather have 100+ degrees then cold. I can't stand it!!

That being said, I bet you don't have cockroaches the size of small dogs (OK maybe I'm exaggerating LOL). :) A good cold spell kills off bugs.
I am very spoiled today... the sun is shining and we'll probably be in the 60's today. Yesterday I think we hit 70's and I was driving the convertible!!
We had snow on Christmas and we are not used to snow.
I'll take heat in the 100's and humidity anytime over cold wet weather. I need to see the sun often.
My daughter is looking at college in PA and we have told her she will freeze her booty off because the weather there is not like what she has grown up accustomed to.

It was 79 degrees yesterday!!!! I couldn't live where it was minus anything!!!!
Yesterday it was in the high 60s, almost 70. Today is in the mid 50s.
I hate cold weather. It's not really nice when it's 104-110 here with no rain for months. But as much as I hate hot weather, I've never shoveled 16 inches of sunshine!

Dang! And I thot we had it cold here!! Right now it's 26 degrees and I'm hating it! It's windy, cold and we have some snow flurries. But I hate it even more because we're having drainage problems right now (we have well water and septic) and I have to run outside every few hours and make sure the freaking sump pump is working!!! Then I also have to drain the hoses so the water doesn't freeze inside them!! It's just been a pain in the butt the last couple weeks!!! And the guy can't even get out here till next week to work on anything!!! I HATE LIVING IN THE COUNTRY FOR SOOOOOOOOOOOO MANY REASONS!!!!
I really want to move somewhere that's warm and just generally nicer temperatures all year round!!!

It's 5 degrees F here in Milwaukee right now. I hate it!! I don't care how many layers I put on I am still cold. My feet are cold, my nose is cold - fingers cold. There is no way I would leave the house if it was as cold as you are. I am home now from a work meeting and will not be leaving again today. I can't believe your going to swim lessons. How horrible to be wet and cold. ick. Stay home!! :)
A little further east from Robin in Oakland CA and it is 51 deg here at 11:30 a.m. We did have some "cold" nights last week in the high 20s where we had to protect sensitive plants such as citrus trees. Nothing to whine about though, but being true Californians we do. By that, I mean I hear a complaint about the weather most days than not (too hot, too cold, WHAT IT"S actually RAINING!) The day after Hurrican Sandy another Mom started complaining about the weather to me and I said, "Really!?! Let's not go there today." She wasn't happy with me but sometimes it just doesn't seem right. (Sad but True)

I only worry about bringing in my daughter's aloe plant a few nights a year. It dipped down almost to the high 30s earlier this week. We haven't had a hard freeze yet this winter. The highs a few days last week were low-mid 80s. The dog keeps starting to blow her winter coat... yeah.. in January. :(
The heat actually did kick on a little last night, but I wore running shorts and a running tanktop (no sleeves) to the gym yesterday. My kids spent yesterday with their uncle riding bikes on the beach all afternoon. No jackets required.
ETA: I guess the flip side is that we DO have:
palmetto bugs (the HUGE roaches that live in the woods, not the little german roaches, though you CAN get those, we don't)
Sand gnats (they are flying teeth, also called "no see'ums")
poisonous snakes.
seasonal deer flies and horse flies (they are terrible, and make you itch or or bleed, depending upon which one bites you)
99% relative humidity during all the "nice" weather
and a few other nuisance things.... but we are used to all of them. I am not sure I could get used to cold like you describe.
Well it's noon and it's warmed up to -4, -26 with windchill. Teenage drama queen decided to hold a tantrum this morning and not heed the warnings we were leaving, so she had to walk the 3 blocks to school. Oh well, at least she'll have something valid to be mad about for once.
Hard to believe it was 45 degrees just a couple days ago!
I'm late to respond, but I had to laugh. When I was young and dared to complain to my Depression-raised father that it was too cold outside, here was his typical response.
"Back when I was a kid (doesn't it ALWAYS start that way?), it was 50 below and we walked 5 miles to school, always uphill, always against the wind, always with 20 pounds of books, to sit in a barely heated 50-child classroom taught by a nun with a long wooden ruler. So shut up, get dressed, and get to the bus stop!"
While it didn't stop our whining, we walked the 5 blocks to the bus stop with our eyes squinted together closed, because it was do darn cold. When I got to the bus stop, my eyelashes had frozen together and I had to thaw them out with my fingers. School was NEVER cancelled for cold in the 1970s and 1980s. That's my memory, anyhow
Personally, I'm glad we're getting some real weather for once. Give these kids something to remember! (hee hee)
P.S. Teens will never wear a hat no matter how cold. I always shake my head at bus stops when I see a bunch of kids in skinny jeans and no caps freezing.
Well since it is just for fun-my mom was from Iceland and you think cold-right? Nope, they are way warmer than you and me today and most of the winter. They seldom go below 30 degrees in winter but their summers rarely get about above the 60's so that is the tradeoff.
We did visit my relatives in August last year and my husband got to go snowmobiling (on the glaciers, of course) but it is still cool to say :)

Here is Colorado it is near 60. It is beautiful out and we are spending time outside and using the grill. We just got over a cold spell. I'm sure another will come but I am hoping it comes with snow. Man do we need the snow.

We're having a heat wave. Over 40 and sunny. 62 one day last week. Feels like spring. Unfortunately, my aspen are starting to bud and the warm won't last. But the sunshine sure feels good.
According the weather report that I just looked at it is -9 Fahrenheit but it feels like -25 with windchill.
Unfortunately what hits ND usually hits MN a couple days later so it looks like I'm gonna be experiencing similar to what you are in a couple days.

Today was about 75 degrees. No wind, no chill. : ) It's been like that for the last several days.
Prior to that, we did have surprisingly cold weather for a couple of weeks. 30's at night, low 50's during the day. I thought it was FREEZING!
Here the air temp is -6 degrees fahrenheit (-21 celcius). With windchill it's -35 degrees Fahrenheit. We have a 25 mile an hour wind, which is better than last night's 35-40 mph wind! It's awful!
I could not live in that! I also despise extreme heat though. I grew up and still live near Seattle, today is sunny and 40.
Right now at 9am it's -15 F with no windchill (wind died down). Our high is going to be 2 F around 9pm tonight and then will be on a warming trend. By the weekend it will be in the 30"s.......can't wait. Might be able to get the rest of the outside Christmas decorations down...lol
Our schools are closed for the day. Not really sure why because when my boys were in school they didn't close because of cold weather. Just didn't let them out for recess. My son's comment on how the school district has gotten soft over the years. I think they are doing CYA so parents can't bring up a lawsuit because a child got frostbite.
I don't have a reason to leave the house (I work from home) and I don't have children at home so the cold weather doesn't bother me. I do feel for my hubby who has to get up, go to work and sometimes works outside. This week he's lucky and has a inside job :)

This is the coldest we've been all winter, and that's rare for us. It's 21F with a windchill of 9F. No biggie. I really hate when it goes below 0, for some reason that's my comfort limit.
According to the thermometer in our yard, it is 29 degrees below zero Farenheit this morning as I take my oldest to the bus stop! I don't know what it is with the windchill. :)
Here in the Chicago suburbs it is a balmy 10'F, wind chill of -8'F. My family in Minnesota has -6'F, with a -26'F wind chill.

My asthmatic son triggers in steam... So the clouds /fog mean he's a mess. Add in the pollution, double mess. Adminning meds every 2 hours for a week meant I took my son up the mountains this weekend (0degree) for some nice weather & clean air.
I swear, sometimes it feels like Heidi around here!!! Ugh. At least we DO have clean air & sunshine in the mountains.
It stayed between -9F and -2F today and was fairly windy. But sunny so it didn't feel bad in the main part of the day. I have to go out a lot throughout the day to record info off cars, pull computer codes, etc. I wore my flannel lined jeans, my Dale windstopper Norwegian sweater, and my muckluck boots, and winter hat all day. I was comfy both inside our business and outside without having to put layers on and off. Other than my pen wanting to freeze up it wasn't too bad. But your temps are significantly below us!
Reading your post and the responses reminds me of a winter camping trip when I was 18. To the Southerners: Yes, you can camp in a tent in the winter and not die :) We were out in the BWCAW for 3 days. It seemed a might bit colder than normal, we had to keep on an extra layer when snowshoeing, but nothing we felt we couldn't handle (I was with my younger brother and sister). When we got back to civilization, we found out the temp had been -20F the whole time we were out. Who knew!
We have single digets today with wind chils in the negatives. It's typical for us though. It's supposed to get worse tonight into tomorrow so I'll be driving the kids to school and bundling them up.
I am not a fan of the cold but tolerate if without a problem. Now snow and ice, another story. The only time cold bothers me is whenmI leave at 6am to pick up my grandaughter. No daylight makes the 9 degrees seem like -90.
