JFF - Does Your Daily Silverware Match?

Did it ever match???

When we first married nearly 20 years ago, we mixed our silverware drawers together. My SIL was very bothered by this and bought us a new set from Costco. I went and picked up a second set right away, as I have a big family and need more than the standard 8 settings.

I realized a few weeks ago that I am missing about 10 forks. Probably taken to school or thrown out accidentally at parties.

After pricing new sets....I changed my mind and headed for the thrift store where I promptly bought forks at 4 for .99 cents.

I was never bothered by my mismatched set from the beginning. And I'm sort of nostalgic now about where those old patterns went to.

What can I do next?

Mine does... For now.

I bought a whole bunch of cheap Ikea flatware 10 years ago.

One of the control games my ex played, though, was to break in and leave little 'ways' for me to know he'd been there.

One time, he stole all the forks.

<rolls eyes>

So now I need new forks. And the Ikea set is no longer made.

_____

FUNNY: I was just at my mum's. Her sets are VERY mismatched. I used a spoon yesterday that when I was 4 years old I accidentally stole from delta airlines 30 years ago (back when airlines used real silverware!). I vividly remember finding it in my carry on (bright pink hello kitty bag) when we got home, I'd lost it and couldn't find it on the plane after dropping it. I had nightmares for weeks (also freaked out on the spot) that the police were going to come arrest me for stealing it!!!

It's a great spoon.

No arrest, yet!

It is nice to have a matching set but it doesnt necessailry bother me. I got married 9 years ago and we still have that set but like you I was thinking I am missing A LOT. I did get a cute (cheap) "bamboo" novelty set a while back. It only had 4 each of spoons, forks, knives (12 pieces total). But there are no more knives from that. Then I refused to let my husband get rid of the toddler utensils because my kids (4 n 7) still use them (and it gives us more in rotation). I was literally thinking the other day that I need more. But the thought of buying a new set bums me out because it is expensive and what do I do with my old stuff? it is perfectly good and I dont want to just throw it out but I am just missing stuff. Thanks for the thrift store tip!

When we got married, we got an engraved matching cutlery set for 12.

Then we had kids, and the spoons and forks started to disappear. I assume into the trash. So now we're mismatched with fill-ins from other locations.

i've been with the ol' man for almost 30 years now, and we've NEVER had a full matching set!
we're helping my parents pack and downsize to move to a retirement community, and they gave us a beautiful velvet box with a GORGEOUS set of real silverware. mumsie (who is actually my SM) says she thinks it was given to my mom when she and big daddy got married. at some point i'll laboriously polish it and use it.
but in the meantime we'll keep using our fun eclectic set of mismatches.

Yes. I still have the same flatware that my mother bought us as an engagement gift 22 years ago. I am missing most of the teaspoons, thanks to the years of the snow dance when the kids were in elementary school, I'm sure.

My first daily flatware did match, yes, and we had it for about forty years. We just did without when pieces went missing. I never could find any more. Finally I bought a whole new set a couple of years ago. It should probably last longer than I do.

We received several place settings of sterling flatware from my parents as a wedding present (you can tell from that statement that we were married long ago). I wanted to add to it, but it was too expensive at first, and then the pattern was discontinued. However, when my mother moved into a retirement center, she split her sterling between my sister and me. So I have two different patterns, and I enjoy mixing them when company comes. Actually, I've inherited a lot of old silver pieces, and I love polishing them to keep them shiny. It isn't hard if you do it regularly - you know, like you do maintenance on your car to keep it in good running condition.

When DH and I first moved in together in graduate school we were very pleased to discover we owned the same flatware set. So as poor grad students we had service for 16 and coffee service for 32 (of course we had nowhere near that many plates or anything else). Fortunately most of the pieces eaten by the garbage disposable have been teaspoons so we still have plenty left.

Nope. I have part of my g-ma's set, mine from our wedding and another extra set all mixed together. My glasses are the same way. Plates/bowls too! I have all antiques in my house. It is a complete eclectic household. Nothing matches!

No, it doesn't. I sort of wish it did, sometimes... my husband has a beautiful, simple German set of silverware, and it only has larger soup spoons (my mouth isn't that big!) and coffee spoons, so I've found some cute antique teaspoons to fill the gap.

Also, the forks are also standard sized or dessert-sized, so we needed flatware for a five year old. My old set of 60s retro rosebud (was a wedding gift to my folks; my dad kept it for me) salad fork and spoon is used for Kiddo and also as extras for camping.

If I had my way, I'd find some fine Oneidaware, like what grandma had on the table at Thanksgiving. Maybe one day...

Yes, mine all match. I like to have them match, and although I do think some silverware sets are a bit much for what they are, I was happy to spend the money for them to match. It makes me feel happy. ;) I get a little grouchy when my husband takes our real forks and other silverware to work because he's not very responsible with things like this that leave our house...I've lost countless coffee cups, tupperware, and other drink cups, I don't like loosing my silverware!!!

We have three "sets" of silverware. An inexpensive but pretty service for 12 from World Market, my Grandmother's silver for special occasions and a bunch of "odds and ends" for camping, packing in school lunches or using for big BBQ's or beach parties. You can get extras of pretty high quality at thrift stores and it's great not to "lose" a spoon every time my kids eat yogurt in their lunch.

I like to set the table, cloth napkins, matching silverware most nights for dinner. If you don't care don't let anyone else change your mind, don't sweat the small stuff.

Rarely do we have matching sets unless it's our nice one on holidays and even then, there's not enough of one set to go around.

Nobody ever noticed and as far as I know, nobody ever cared! The grown ups and older people who are more traditional always sit at the table where everything matches. Other than that, me and my dh don't care.

Yes mine matches and it has been almost 25 years.

I invested in a good flatware set and when I could afford it (or I used money that was given as a gift) I bought 2 more sets.

I keep the extras in my china hutch drawer. For some reason, it is the spoons at my house that go MIA or get caught in the disposer. When that happens, I have a back up for replacement.

I wouldn't be bothered if someone did not have a matching set or if I had to replenish my neverending missing spoons with something that didn't quite match.

Some of mine matches! lol
I have some from about four different sets. I always seem to lose the forks and smaller spoons! I would love a full set, but they are so expensive, I feel like it's a waste since I have so many pieces that are perfectly good.

Ours has always matched.

We got a cheap set when we got married, and we used that for a very long time. Then my grandmother died a few years ago, and I inherited her very nice set. We use that now, and I love it because I think of her all the time. Sometimes we need more, though, so I bought another set at JC Penney's that looks very similar to my grandmother's set. It's much cheaper, and you can tell because it's much lighter (in weight), but it looks almost the same.

It would really bug me to have silverware that didn't match.

No. Some matches. Some does not. When we need extras, MIL brings hers over. We have gotten some very plain spoons at Target to fill in what went missing for everyday use.

Ah Mum, I LOVE my flatware I got for wedding presents, mostly from my husband's grandmother! I have looked ever since when seeing flatware in stores to see if they have my pattern, but they never do. So many of my teaspoons went missing when my sister lived with me many years ago - I think she threw them away when she was scraping plates (not paying attention.)

I bought a cheap set at Costco just to have more so I wouldn't have to wash them so often, but I don't really like them at all. Wish I knew where to buy my favorite set!!

Yes.
My pattern does not leave the house.

We have a drawer of 'picnic' cutlery from my husbands family cottage (was sold off during his parents divorce) which is a hodge podge of cheap old flatware, but no one cares if any of that goes missing so it goes on travel or to the office or in lunch bags or on picnics.
You can pick up cheap stuff at yard sales or flea markets.

Yep, they all match. Or should I say, did match. We started with about 16 place settings. One day after a soup party, I realized that I was running low on spoons. My MIL gave a bunch of her old spoons to me to make up for my "lost" spoons. I'm so OCD regarding certain things and silverware is one of them. Ever since, I haven't had anyone over for a soup dinner because not all the cutlery would match.

Recently a friend of mine mentioned that I could get my replacement spoons on a website called replacements.com. Well by golly they do have my spoons, unfortunately it will cost me a small fortune to get them. I'll have to wait for an occassion to tell my husband that I'm going to order my original spoons again, but I will get them!!

My husband and I both had some from our prior marriage, and with all 3 of our kids (and whoever else) randomly throwing them away without us catching it, I have added sets too. I have found good deals with matching "namebrand" sets at goodwill for a couple bucks so I usually buy those. I happened upon a complete set for 12, not top of the line, but they MATCH, at goodwill for like $5 so I use those for parties when we have people over. So if they get thrown away accidentally, no big deal. But for everyday, as long as I don't run out, we have a bunch of mis-matched ones and I don't care, I buy them as I come across them and need them. However, when the kids get older, it is my *goal* to have nice dishes, glasses and silverware again. =)
