My mother had an IUD baby 36 years ago (my brother) and they did not remove the IUD...The resident Dr. recognized her not by her face (he only examined her once) but by her IUD. He was born a healthy 7 pounds.
I was just wondering if anybody else has ever gotten pregnant while they had an IUD. I have a ParaGuard (since July '07) and just found out we're 8 weeks pregnant. The IUD has moved and we're waiting to get an appointment to see if they can safely take it out. I'm just nervous and can't find much information to satisfy me. I know if they don't take it out I'm a little higher risk for miscarriage and preterm labor; and I know if they do take it out I still risk a miscarriage. I guess I'm just looking for other moms that have been in my same situation to give me some comfort and advice. My husband and I are happy to be pregnant again (even though this was a complete surprise). Thanks in advance!
Thank you so much for all the responses. I saw the doctor and our little peanut is doing fine and the IUD can't be removed but it's far enough away from the baby that we have every reason to believe everything will be fine. We're just taking it one day at a time. That's all you can do! Thanks Mamas!!

Im a nursing student and I was able to go in during a c-section and watch...after the baby was out...they removed the IUD. Both baby and mom were fine.
i have not personally gone through this, i have a mirena, but i do know someone that has, her's moves up in her uterus area and they couldn't remove it. she had a healthy baby and pregnancy.
are they going to do an ultrasound to see where it is or do they have it located? I would think that the location of the IUD would influence the decision you make.
Hello A. I am a positive story to a pregnancy with an IUD. My surprise baby will be turning 8 this June. In the beginning they didn't tell me much either and I thought I was doomed to have D&C and be the bearer of bad news to my family. My IUD had moved as well and thus this is why I got pregnant with suprise baby number three. My IUD was not in place and doing it's job. What a blessing because we wouldn't have this wonderful bundle of energy in our life. Apparently my IUD had moved and scar tissue had formed around it so in my case they decided not to try and remove the IUD. I went my whole pregnancy with the IUD in place and had a succesful pregnancy. I was put on bed rest the last month due to early contractions and delivered two weeks early vaginally. They were ready to do a c-section if needed but I had no complications. I had the IUD removed 6 weeks after delivery and my tubes tied at the same time. I don't know what your doctors will discover in your case but usually they don't reveal too much information until they do more ultra sounds to see exactly where the IUD is and where the baby has implanted as well. They need to form a plan specific to your case and then you will be flooded with information on what to do. If you like and trust your doctor you are in good hands. They want to deliver a healthy baby just as much as you. Follow your gut and get a scond opinion if you don't feel comfortable with their plan for you. Good Luck and God Bless your new baby. My prayers are with you for a healthy and happy delivery.

http://www.brooksidepress.org/Products/Military_OBGYN/Tex... - IUDs are very effective at preventing pregnancy, but there is a small failure rate of about 1-2% each year.
If pregnancy occurs, it is important to remove the IUD immediately (that day). The normal spontaneous miscarriage rate is about 18-20%. For women who conceive despite an IUD, the miscarriage rate is about 25% when the IUD is removed immediately. If the IUD is left in place, the miscarriage rate increases to about 50%, and many of those are septic mid-trimester losses which are particularly unpleasant and which are associated with subsequent infertility in some cases.

HI!
My niece just told us last week that she is pregnant (5 wks.) and had an IUD in at the time of conception. She had just had it removed the day before talking with me and was doing fine. she was told of the risk of miscarriage, but so far hadn't bled at all and was feeling good. I haven't talked to her since--hope all is still going well for her.
Good luck to you!!
Sorry- No advice, but you and baby are in my prayers!
Hi A.: Don't know if this will be of any help since it was so long ago--my cousin got pregnant with an IUD in place in 1974. She had it removed as soon as she found out she was pregnant. She had a normal pregnancy and a healthy son who is now 34 and a dad himself.
All the very best to you.
I have had an IUD for 5 years and have never gotten pregnate. However, I just wanted to wish you the best!!!
Hi,
My third daughter was a paraguard baby! I delivered her 3 days before her due date at home. My advice stop reading the scary stories online. Oh and the IUD had floated above the baby so they were unable to remove it. It came out following baby. 5 years ago May 6th!
A.,
I had an IUD birth. I received the same information that in a pregnancy the IUD can be lodged in the baby, I could lose the baby if I had it taken out, etc.
I want you to know that within four months of my pregnancy, the baby literally pushed the IUD out. The doctor was amazed. He had no problems taking it out all the way.
I would suggest that you feel your body and the baby and if you feel that there is a danger to either you or the baby have the doctor take it out.
My daughter was 3 weeks early and is now a Junior in College.

i didn't get pregnant on the iud, but i have a friend who did. they didn't take it out for fear that the actual procedure to take it out would cause a miscarriage. she kept it in until she delivered a healthy baby at full term. good luck!
