IUD For Contraception?

Hello,

I am getting ready to have baby #3 .. in 2 days actually. It will be a planned c-section due to a high risk complication that roared its ugly head last week. I have blood clots, we (baby and I) are very blessed to still be here due to all the complications that arose. The prospect of having more children ...at least right away is very unappealing to me and my hubby! As it stands now, we will NOT be able to use the pill, shot, patch etc.. (which truth be told we became pregnant with both the pill and condoms- and therefor are not so impressed with their ability to prevent pregnancy) We tend to practice NFP but at this time neither of us feel that is the best alternative, and would like something that is a little more permanent. We considered Tubal ligation, and a Vasectomy, but there is something about it that we are still uncertain of. I have heard good things about the IUD/IUS but I would like to hear personal experience. I am leaning toward the copper non hormonal IUD, but when I asked the OB he mentioned only the hormonal IUD. Is it even still possible to get the copper one or no? ANY thoughts would be helpful as I should settle on what we are doing ASAP.

Thanks,
K. :-)

I have mirena and have had no problems. I had twin boys and desided that I might want another one some day but not anytime soon. So mirena works awesome for me. The only side effect is that I spot for a week out of the month, no real pd.

I really wanted to get Mirena an IUS and i already talked to my doctor about it but then i checked with our insurance and they dont cover it. I dont know why... its gotta be cheaper then them covering another pregnancy and delivery! So I am back on the pill :(

google Mirena for more info, it looked really good!

Like a many of the other girls i have the Mirena too. It took not even 5 minutes for them to put it in, I had some cramping that day and only bleed for about 4 days afterward. Its expensive ($645) but check with your insurance i only had to pay my copay plus $15. Its good for five years, but can be taken out sooner. We weren't sure if we want to have another yet so we went with that option. Good luck with your decision. Hope your c-section goes well!

I also have Mirena. I love it. I have a light, 3 day period every 3 months and that is it. I have had it for 14 months now and it is great. A little discomfort when they inserted it, heavy bleeding for about 3 weeks after, but since then, it has been great.

Hi Kim

I Had the non hormonal one and while I breastfed my son it was fine I really didn't get a cycle. Afterward, I will say I had the worst of the worst! I hated it. It's great if you want to BF and not expose the baby to the hormones. Once I got a hold of my doctor I asked to have it changed and I love the hormonal one. I barely have a cycle, few cramps, and a relief that I'm not pregnant.

I thought the copper implant was great too, until I got pregnant with it. I have gotten pregnant on the pill, depo and the IUD. Luckily the pregnancy wasn't ectopic like most of them turn out to be. When they told me I was pregnant, I didn't believe them. I thought I had mono or something. They did an ultrasound and said that the baby was fine and was where he was supposed to be. They sent me up to the OB dept and took it out and I checked for a miscarriage every day for weeks. I now have a healthy 4 year old boy. It's not effective for everyone, but neither it conventional tubial ligation. We decided that we were done having children and I got the Essure method done. It's like having your tubes tied but they go in vaginally so no surgery and you go home the same day. It's not reversable and it's 100% effective because they can check for leaks with a dye (unlike the other one). Just thought I'd throw that info out there for you :) good luck on your decision

Hello K.,

I have had a great expirience with the copper T.
I has been great. At the beggining you do get in my case heavy periods and cramping but to me this is normal i have always had lots of cramping during period. But since the flow of my period has been heavy I assume that has helped me lost a lot of weight. My mom used to use the copper T and had told me that you loose weight with this. But did nit believe her and she eas right. I loce the copper T because i dont worry about protection and it a pro for both you and your husband.

I had the Paragard. Other than when I had my period, I was quite happy with it. It does cause heavier bleeding and cramping.

Doctors are less likely to do copper iud's because they have a higher rate of tearing the uterus. If you are worrying about the level of hormones and breastfeeding. I received an IUD after my second son was born and breatfeed him fine without any problems. You can keep the IUD in for up to 5 years. I love mine.
