I have the Mirena & I love it! Like you, I (think) I am done having kids but I don't want to do anything permanent to my body. I haven't had a period since before my 2 1/2 year old was conceived. YAY! The hormones don't bother me and getting it put in was not painful for me in the least. :)

I have a friend who had a very bad experience with the IUD. Her bad experience resulted in 2 pregancies and she now has 2 little boys. I recently started using the Nuva Ring. I have never been on birth control before (we have 3 kids and my ex-hubby had a vasectomy). But I have been pleased with my Nuva Ring. You wear it for 3 weeks, then take it out for one week so you can have a period, then put it back in for 3 weeks. Its simple to use, and it delivers a low dose of hormones so I don't have a lot of side effects. You may want to ask you doc if the Nuva Ring is a good option for you. From what I understand, many women are now choosing it over the pill or the shot.

Not sure how old you are, etc. but.... My doc recommended paraguard (she does both) since I didn't like the hormone aspect. The pill aggravated my stomach, I didn't want to deal with hormones, increased risks associated with hormones, etc. The cool thing about paraguard is it lasts for 10 yrs so it will see me into menopause unlike the Mirena that only lasts 5 yrs (I think). My friend on Mirena has worse cramps than I do, but that may just be here. Also, I know that a lot of women will eventually lose their period on Mirena so that might be a plus for you.

Having it put in was nothing that a few motrin couldn't take care of. It was uncomfortable for a few minutes, but nothing compared to labor. My periods have been fairly regular but a bit longer (I had it done in Oct/Nov) and cramping has not been any worse.

I decided on the IUD after researchign and talking to my Dr. At first I wanted my tubes tied because I was put off by the idea of having something in me. I've since talked to a couple of women who've had way worse symptoms after having their tubes tied. Plus, surgery is nothing to take lightly. IUDs can always be removed too if it bothers you too much or you change your mind about the kid thing.

I love the almost no periods, no pill to remember to take, and no children so far & I have had it for 1.5 years, BUT I am moodier, snippier, and have a shorter temper and patience. For those reasons I'm having it removed next week. On to plan B...my hubby's turn!:-)

The Mirena is the best thing ever made... I love it...not enough hormones in it to notice...No period...nothing to think about. I have been on shots and pills and this is the best...I have had mine nearly 2 years now.

You are welcome to email me privately if you had more questions..

Good luck...

I have had an IUD for over a year now. In the beginning
my husband complained that it was uncomfortable feeling
but after a few months we didnt complain anymore. I love
it. The freedom of not having to remember to take a pill and
the fact that it last for 5 years. I decided on it for
the same reasons. I was not crazy about surgery and neither
was my husband. I really havent any issues. My periods are lighter and what's not to love about that. I hope this helps.
