I think I am done having kids but do not want to do anything permanent just yet. I have thought about getting an IUD and wondered what others have experience with the birth control. Any problems or concerns?

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
I have a 4 year old and a 15 month old. At my 6 week check up after my 2nd child was born, I got the ParaGard IUD. I am really happy with it.

I chose the ParaGard over the Mirena, because I didn't want any hormones. The one I have is good for 10 years and I believe the Mirena is good for 5. I have friends with the Mirena and they are just as happy.

I love the fact that I don't have to think about it. I don't feel it and it was a breeze getting put in - I hardly felt anything!

I like that it could be in for 10 years or taken out today if I wanted. The only issue was that my first few periods were really heavy, but I don't know if that was related to the IUD or not having my period for so long. After a few months it has gotten much better. I think some of the literature says to expect more cramping at the time of your period, but I didn't notice any thing out of the ordinary.

Good Luck with your decision. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

p.s. I am in Beverly too!

Hi M.,

I use the Mirena IUD and I love it. It was slightly uncomfortable to put in, but I was given ibuprofen before it was inserted. I had two light periods, then nothing. I've used this for almost a year with no problems. Good luck in your decision.

I had an IUD but I got alot of infection, I also have used the norplant which help me out alot, it is easy and it lasts for five yrs,and you can take them out ealier if you desire it. Doesn't hurt and you are in and out of the doctor's office. I had this done and took them out and a year later had a healthy baby girl, who is now 17,lol.

Hi M.,
I had the Mirena IUD placed at my 6wk check up after my daughter's birth almost 4 yrs ago. The fisrt few months were kinda spotty but not enough to stress over (+ my OB said it was normal). I really loved it, for me it was peace of mind without any side effects at all. This past summer we decided to add to our family so I had it removed and am now 5 months pregnant. I'll defenitely be getting another one after this delivery. Good Luck!
