You don't mention which IUD you have. I have the Mirena and mine has been wonderful. I would worry a lot about those symptoms. I got mine in 5/06 and I bled a little irregulary the first couple of months and from then on I don't have anything but maybe slight spotting. My PMS might be a little more than before, but I think it seems worse during months I am more stressed so it could just be that.

I would worry that your doc just sends you home with no explanation. I think I would get the second just based on that.

I hope it gets better for you.

Good luck!

I just got one in November 07. Cramps are common but occassional for me. My md warned me but said they should not be severe. Maybe a second opinion is a good idea. My dr said if I start feeling that bad as you describe to come in asap for an ultrasound to see if the iud has moved. I do have bad cramps that feel like sharp menstrual cramps, but labor-no.

I also have mirena, and my experience is almost identicle to the person above me. I hope you find answers soon!

I'va had a mirena IUD for 4 years. I had irregular bleeding for about 6 months but now my periods are very light. I get cramps 1 day a month but Alleve takes care of them. If after 1-1/2 yrs if you are still bleeding heavily and having worse cramps then you did when on no birth control then I would have it removed. You probably aren't ready for permanent sterilization but you might want to look into the once a month patch or shot if you don't like the pill.

I have had an IUD for 15 years. I'm sure the copper has worn off by now but my Doc says it is still in working order and at my age I shouldn't get pregnant. The side effects for me are heavy bleeding for a few days but I've never suffered from severe cramping. I don't think I could tolerate that. For the last year, I am having mild infections that over the counter meds take care of. Doc says that is OK as long as the infections come and go. I am considering having it removed because of the infections. I just don't want to worry about birth control at this stage of my life. 3 boys ages-24,19,16.
I would probably get a second opinion or have the IUD removed if you are in that much pain. Maybe you could go with the BC shots instead.

Hi, O.. This is not normal, no matter what your doctor tells you. I would seek a second opinion. This is your health we're talking about. I've had a couple of different types of IUDs, and I never had a moment's problem with them. I also am a former healthcare worker.
Good luck.

O., Hi! I am soooo glad to see this question. I was planning on asking it myself. I got the IUD-Mirena, in December 2007. Since it was so recent, I thought maybe the cramps, heavy bleeding and pain would go away. I too have seen the doctor and called about it several times. I have been instructed to "wait" or just have it taken out. I got pregnant, twice, on birth control pills. So, this is why I want to use this form of birth control. I am going to wait it out I guess. Are you having any pain during intercourse?
