I had Mirena (the one WITH hormones) put in after the birth of my first son - I discovered how it works.... by making sex so painful that you don't have it, therefore you don't get pregnant. I had over a year of misery, with my obgyn's office saying the pain I felt was overexagerated and not related to the IUD before another doctor pulled it out. Relief was almost immediate.

IUDs in general can also cause inflammation and scarring, which can result in complications if you decide to have another baby.

My only experience with IUD is Mirena and I hate them, I would have 10 more pregnancies before I had another IUD of any kind put in. But I hear other people love it.

I have had the copper IUD since Dec 2005. I had it put in right after my 6 weeks check-up after having my son. I actually got pregnant on the pills, so didn't want to risk that again. I had no problems with putting it in or since then. It is great for a busy mom because you don't have to remember to take anything and it doesn't have the hormonal side affects of some of the other forms of birth control. My periods are slightly heavier than before, but my doctor said that some women have heavier peroids after having a child, so who knows what causes that. My best friend has the 5-year one with hormones and she loves it too. She has only had 1 period in 2 years with it. The Insersion is a medical procedure and where most of the problems happen, so I think that as long as you have a good OB/GYN to put it in, its great!

I have the Mirena IUD and am very happy with it, have had it for a year and a half now I got it after my second son. My periods come and go not very often but are a lot less sometimes there is hardly anything at all. =)

I don't have one, but my friend had to have the non hormone one because of another health problem.... She laid on the couch for 4 days with ice and hot packs. She said she would never do it again that it was right up there with birth in pain.

You are talking about the IUD that is good for 10 years, Right?
Well I had the one with the copper for 6 years and after about 2 years I was having horrible cramps and a lot of bleeding I would have pain when I would be "with" my husband and some times bleeding after. It was really bad and that lasted until I had it removed. I had a baby 7 months ago and I now have the new IUD ( Mirena)the one with the hormones and it is awesome so far. I don't bleed a lot I love the new one.I have a very light period and it is painless I love the new one. My husbands Grandmother had the old IUD and she finally had to have a hysterectomy. It is a good birth control. I have to say that, but I will never get the old one again. The one thing I can say is they are pretty painless to remove. So if you don't like it you can always remove it. Everyone reacts differently to things. I hope you find what works for you. Good Luck! If you have any more questions please fell free to ask me.

I got the IUD back in October of 06' after having our baby. I used to take birth control pills, but my body adapts quickly to hormones and I would end up bleeding through within 2-6 weeks, and then would need a higher dosage of hormones. Plus, it would add stress and mood swings. With the copper IUD I don't have to worry about hormones, or weird mood swings. I feel normal, and I don't have to worry about an unexpected period. It's also a lot cheaper over all than pills. The only downside was when I did get my period it was in full force. However, at least I know when it's coming now, down to the day. The first time you have your period after having a baby it is heavy, but with the IUD it's even more so. Don't be alarmed if you bleed A LOT! But, I love it, and both of my sisters have one too. I go the Mirena IUD placed 7 weeks after my son was born (that was 15 months ago) and I've never regretted it! I hated taking the pill - I was really moody with it and it really effected my sex drive. I think the worst part of having it placed was that the speculum (that instrument they use during a pap smear) just had to stay in a little longer. I had light cramps that evening, but nothing since then. I also still have not had a period with it- yeah! My doctor assured me my chances of conceiving when we're ready for another child are the same as they would be if I were taking the pill. i absolutely love it and I tell all my friends about it!

I had an IUD (the copper without hormones) put in February 2006. It is supposed to be effective for 10 years. At first it is pretty uncomfortable due to cramping. It felt like I was having a really long menstral cycle! You can take Tylenol to ease the cramping however, I chose not to. I would say it takes two - four months to get used to it; since then it has been great - unnoticeable.

I've had the same kind of IUD for almost 7 years now. I love it! It is quite uncomfortable when they have it put in, and the first few months you will bleed very heavily and cramp worse...but after that it's all fun and games with no babies. LOL

i have had an Iud since nov this year after my second son was born so far so good! so far my periods have still been a little off schedule and some stronger and longer. I will say though that i have even heard lots of different stories about IUDs like: your periods are less often or that you stop having them and then there is the one about heavier, longer periods. there is also a risk of having ectopic and tubal pregnancies but that chance is slim. well hope that helps congrats on the baby

I have had both the kind without hormones and the kind with. I prefer the one without. The only side effect I noticed was my periods were a little heavier, but nothing I would complain about. However on the one with the hormone (Mirena) I have no periods. I had the copper kind for two years and then had it removed when wanted to try for another baby and had no problems. Both kinds have been effective birth control for me. Hope that helps and good luck!

Hi C.. I had a copper IUD inserted about a year after my second child was born, I can't remember why we waited so long. Anyway, I had it for 3 years and it was great. I remember wanting to throw up upon insertion. I do not remember any cramping. My periods were lighter. When I had it removed, about a year ago, we got pregnant right away and had a third child in January. I was planning on having another inserted but my husband wants to have another child and I am so excited. Best of luck with the new baby and your decision. J.

i have the mirena iud. i love having it. i dont have to take birth control everyday, i dont get my period...ever, and it is really hassle free. however, to get it inserted was extremly painful. usually patients are told to take tylenol before the insertion, and someone forgot to tell me. but even with the tylenol, it would have hurt. i got severe cramping from my waist to my knees as soon as it was inserted. then i cramped for about 2 days with the pain slowly subsiding . it was really miserable and painful. but, that being said, since i have not had to deal with periods or little pills and i will get it reinserted in 5 years. i will just ask for some heavy duty pain medication beforehand.

I had my second child seven years ago in march and I have had my copper iud for that same amount of time. The placement of the iud was almost painless, except for some cramping. The iud itself is something that i check every month, but other than that, you never know that it was there. The only thing that I have had a problem with is that right after I got the iud and i was ready to start having sex with my husband again, he said he could feel the string. After a while he said he couldn't feel it any more. Personally, I don't think he felt it. I just think that he was conscious about it and he was "trying" to feel it. Other than that, it's been smooth sailing for me and my iud.
