I've had an IUD for a long time now, this is my second one. We took out the first one to try for my Son....then after we had him I got another IUD. Anyways I really love it, mostly because there is no hassel....no period!!! yay.....etc.

Well after much thought and alot of painful migraines, i'm thinking that the IUD has been causeing these migraines all along. I noticed them starting when I first had it inserted after my daughter was born.....and they have gradually gotten worse......when I had the IUD taken out to get pregnant with my son, I didn't have any migraines but maybe 1 the whole time. So i'm thinking since my health insurance deductable is met already this year that I try and take it out...wait a couple months and see if that was the problem. Just wanted to get opinions on what you ladies think???

Thanks for the responses so far.....I should add that yes I have seen a Neurologist, Family Doctor, My OB....and a Pain specialist. I do take imitrix and also maxalt for migraines which do take them right away......I just thought i'd be better off not having them at all.....also i've gone as far as going to a pain specialist and having a botox injection into my neck and shoulder area where most of the tension is????? So we'll see. But I figured i could take it out and see and if it's not that....get a new one inserted before the end of the year when my deductable starts over again!

What can I do next?

Have you tried Imitrex for your migraines? I have the same problem and was just considering this weekend (when I got another one) that it might be caused by the IUD. I am not positive though - there is a lot going on in my life, and stress is always a factor. Anyways.....imitrex works great for me, I lay down for a bit after I have taken it, and within an hour or so it is gone. SSOOO, you might try that first......

Sorry - I know they SUCK!!

I also have an IUD and have been having the same problem. I am also starting to beleave that the IUD is causing it and the bad cramp I have been having. My sister also has an IUD and is having a ton of problems and made an apt to have it removed. I would like to have mine removed also but an not sure what preventative would work as well as it does without the side effects. I have 3 children and had been on the pill each time I got pregnant.

B., talk to your doctor first.. find out what is causing the migranes.. you might find that you take out your IUD but the problem is still there, or comes back and it could have been something else..

Good luck and sorry you are in such pain.

I had problems with menstrual migraines when I was taking the pill. So I had the Paragard IUD put in, because it doesn't have any hormones. I have an occausional headache, but very mild when I do. Maybe try that one instead of the Mirena.
