Itchy Skin When Falling Asleep, and Fear of Spiders

One of my daughters says she gets "shocks" or "tingles" all over when she's falling asleep and it makes her think there are spiders crawling on her. As a result, she gets upset and doesn't want to sleep. I think I know what she's talking about with the shocks... sometimes I'll get an itch behind my knee, then one by my ear, then another on my arm as I'm lying in bed relaxing before sleep. In fact, i think it's fairly normal and this happens to a lot of people.

But how do I convince her that it's just her skin itching, or stretching, or whatever... and not a black widow that has climbed up onto her bed? She knows logically that there really aren't spiders in her bed, but as she's falling asleep - and wishing she could stay up and play, this turns into a convenient reason for mom to have to come back into her room ten times and cuddle. I can't not go in, because she truly is afraid so she ends up crying and I don't want to teach her that she has to be afraid alone.

What can I do next?

My daughter did the samething & I tried to tell her I get it too blah, blah & she wouldn't take that so what I did was I took her to Ulta (cause they have bigger selection of lotion's) & we bought her own bottle of lavendar lotion and every night after her shower before bed she would put her lotion on & it seemed to make the itches go away. It took a few nights but eventually it stopped & she had no more complaints. she is 15 now & still does the same routine .. Everychild is different & it may not work for your's but give it a try.. Good Luck

Buy her one of those nets that hangs over her bed to keep the spiders out.

If her skin is itching that much her skin is too dry, look at the soaps you are using (does she bathe right before bed?). If changing soaps doesn't work, try lotion.

For her fears, you could try a variation of 'monster spray' as a 'spider spray' for her room.

Monster spray- Water + a few drops of something that smells nice and comforting such as your perfume or a lilac scent in a spray bottle.
