Hello,

My daughter (3.5 y.o.) has an itchy feminine area... I've looked and it doesn't seem red or seem like a yeast problem. Is there something topical I could try before heading to the pediatrician?
I've never had a yeast infection, but I understand they are yeasty.. My daughter doesn't have anything like that (or are they all internal?)

Suggestions?
I hate to go to the pediatrician for nothing... we are really hording cash right now & would hate to pay for "looks fine to me".. but don't want to risk her health, either.
Thanks

What can I do next?

You should always check with a pediatrician, but you may want to try these things first to see if any work, first (if you're trying to save a trip and $$ to the doctor).

Don't use any bubble bath or adult soaps on your daughter when bathing. Try to use soaps that are hypoallergenic/ all-natural. Also, if she's wearing undies, make sure they are cotton and that you're using perfume-free detergent. She may have to have non-perfumed wipes to use to keep clean between wiping (little girls don't always wipe really well and the left-over urine can also irritate and make it itchy).

My daughter had a problem with yeast as a baby and my pediatrician said that I could use a small/thin amount of Lotramin anti fungal(or Gynolotramin)on her bottom. It worked wonderfully, but I wanted to find what kept causing her to get yeasty. I found that certain diapers were the culprit and wouldn't let her skin breathe, and then had to switch diaper brands...so if your daughter is using diapers or pull-ups, you may want to try something new, or try the Lotramin. Your doctor may have another suggestion and you won't have to go in for an appointment, since its really a common issue with little girls with sensitive skin. Its always a good idea to call and check first. Hope that helps, and good luck!

this does in fact sound like a yeast issue, even though you can't see a rash. Give supplemental probiotics for children(available at any health food store) and steer clear of sugars and white flours. You can also wash her with diluted tea tree oil soap. Yeast is much more common than you might think, they do not have to have full blown infections. Probiotics are your best bet because she needs good bacteria to fight off the "Bad" bacteria, this will also help with immune function and digestive health. Good luck!

HI M.,

Take her to the Doctors. You never know it might be itchy on the inside also.

Good luck

hi M.,
even though it LOOKS like there is nothing going on down there, there may still be something. you cant always SEE it. it MAY be a yeast infection, but it could also be something else non serious, that her doctor should look at, such as a bacterial infection for example, that may need a quick dose of meds. are there any other symptoms? maybe its a UTI....unfortunately, the only way to know for sure what it is and/or if she needs meds for it, is to see the doctor.

you usually can't see a yeast infection, until it gets really bad and irritates the outside too. It could also be a UTI. I know a lot of young girls can get them from certain types of soaps and bubble bath. ( Mr. Bubble is a BIIIIG no-no) I would have her checked. I'm sure it's nothing serious, but there is probably nothing you could do at home for her anyway.
