Hi Moms,
My little girs has been itching her head for about 2 weeks. She is terrible with it. I worried about lice we had that episode last year, but she told me just a couple days the school nurse had checked them and nothing. I was thinking maybe shampoo or the dry heat in the house .I was wondering if dry scalp what to do for it? Any help would be appreciated she goes into fits of digging her head. Thanks H.

What can I do next?

It could be your shampoo. If I use typical drug/grocery/dollar store brands my head itches and itches. I have to keep 3 different bottles of shampoo and the matching conditioner in the shower and use a differnt one each day. If I use the same one two days in a row my head will itch.

I now use salon brands and my head doesn't itch.

It could be eczema...my daughter had problems with itching her scalp. After taking her to the pediatrician and then a dermatologist, we found out that she has eczema. I changed her shampoo to Selsun Blue, designed for scalp itch. She doesn't have anymore itching problems on her head.

Take her to the doctor and have the pediatrician tell you what is going on.

It could still be lice. My grandson was "checked" by the school nurse a few months ago during an outbreak, declared clear, and it turned out his itching was, indeed, lice. She was apparently not trained to see the nits, which were close to invisible in his medium-brown hair.

When my daughter told the nurse a couple of days later that grandboy was infested, she became angry and defensive. Not terribly professional, unfortunately. But I hope you'll tell your school nurse if it turns out she was wrong; you may have a better experience than my daughter did.

Check pictures online of what to look for, and do a close inspection yourself with a flashlight. My DD took her family to "Lice Knowing You" and got everyone inspected and treated with natural, non-toxic oil. They do a free follow-up check and treat again if necessary (it wasn't). All has been fine since – no more itching.

When lice are in their juvenile stages they can be really hard to spot. I would do a lice treatment, then comb for lice and nits with a proper nit comb and conditioner, then wioe the residue onto a white tissue. This is the only way I have sometimes been able to confirm when the children have had lice.

Could still be lice. I would have her checked at you doctors office, and they should be able to tell if it is something else. Of you could just treat as lice and see if it helps any. Sometimes lice are hard to see, especially in the early stages, but even in the more advanced stages sometimes, and nurses and doctors can miss them. So I wouldn't rule out lice.

I would keep checking for the lice to be safe on a weekly basis. I would start using some moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I started using conditioner on my daughter at about age 6 because her hair was dry. But with the scalp to you can use the shampoo as well. Just be sure he reminds to keep her eyes closed so they don't burn. Doesn't take long for them to get used to that. Keep the conditioner in while she's cleaning her body and then rinse everything off from head to toe.

Check the hair products you're using on her hair. Any have dimethicone or anything ending in a -cone? Silicone-based hair products make my scalp itch like crazy. I'm so allergic! L'Oreal even has a line of hair products now that are silicone-free. Lots of hair products today are designed to straighten or smooth and 99.9% of the time they use silicone. Check the labels. If that's it, she'll start to feel great as soon as you wash her hair with anything without dimethicone.
