My 17 month old girl is very picky about her eating. she used to at least try everything on her plate but now she just plays with her food and throws it. She's not eating her vegetables at all no more. I don't know what else to do. Any advice??

What can I do next?

She's experimenting with gravity & physics. (Will it hit the wall with my eyes shut? When I use my left hand? With one eye shut? If I scream at the same time? Will is ALWAYS slide down the wall? Will THIS roll as well? Why not? Try again! Can I eat through my EAR??? Wonder of wonders... what about my HAIR???)

She's more interested in cause & effect right now than food. Probably because she's just finished a growth spurt. (During growth spurts kids eat like they're bottomless pits, but right after them, they can frequently live on less than what a bird would).

I really loved this stage (this is also the stage where you find things in weird places... like anything rectangular in anything else rectangular; like the sandwich in the VCR, or the box of kleenex in or under the bed OR when you find things in other relationships... like every single sock in reach piled on the shoes, or whole rolls of toilet paper dumped in the toilet bowl)... but I realize most parents don't.

To combat it

1) NEVER clean up after her (my son cleaned up each and every mess he made starting at about a yearish... of course with my help, but he didn't stop until the mess was cleaned up).

2) Give her a warning: If you throw it, you must not be hungry. She throws it, and down she goes. When she really gets hungry, she won't throw it. (Kids really don't starve themselves).

Just keep offering everything to her. Don't give her too many options at one time. If she's hungry, she'll eat :)

My 18 month old twins did the same thing until we moved them out of their highchairs. They just wanted to be "big boys" and sit at the table with everyone else. Unfortunately, we don't have enough room at our table, so we purchased a small table with two chairs just for them. They now sit down at their own table and eat without such a fuss. They still make a huge mess, but at least they're eating more!

Good luck!

With our little guy, we took to feeding him while he was playing with his food. We'd spoon or fork the food into his mouth while he was going other stuff. He does eat on his own sometimes (either fingers or with a spoon).

We still give him pureed veggies sometimes, if hes not eating his regular (non-baby food) veggies. If he won't eat them by themselves, we mix in some yogurt or apple sauce.... We also give him frozen fruit & veggies (like blueberries- messy, but he loves 'em).

Funny how they change, My 20 mo twins (boy/girl) are so different. My son was exactly like your daughter! He used to eat everything and then got very picky. He eats chicken nuggets, fish sticks, fish like orange roughy, tilapia but no veggies! It's so frustrates me because his twin sister eats all veggies...alone! I can hand her a green bean and she'll stuff it in her mouth, same with peas, carrots, etc. But my son will not! So I would hide behind the meats. Sometimes he'll know and look at the fork before putting it in his mouth, I can't fool him anymore :/
Now, the ONLY way he'll eat all veggies (most), is I make chicken salad! I mix shredded chicken (I buy it from the can), with a can of mix veggies (carrots, peas, lima beans, corn, potatoes) and mayo ( now I use ranch dressing), and he looooves it! If weather is really hot, I just give it to him as is with tostadas or wheat bread. I also warm it up a bit and he eats lots! That is the only way he'll eat veggies, but I try so many different ways. He'll eat spinach mixed in pasta (minibow), he loves Florentine Chicken Pasta. It's a battle but I know our children will outgrow it so I don't sweat it as much anymore. He does eat all fruits and since his developement is right on scale and my son is very stocky and healthy, why worry? Don't worry, if she eats other foods well, don't sweat it. All kids go thru changes of all sorts. I also have a 21 yo daughter and 17 yo son and my son was also very picky and now he eats up a storm! My little twins also love to throw food on the floor. You can also try giving her a little V8, she might like drinking it.
