So What Happened?

These responses have me even more worried now. All the forums on baby name websites seem to think people will recognize the name and pronunciation, since it's growing in popularity. However, this just shows me how much it will actually be mispronounced.

For all those wondering, you pronounce the name "Eye-lah".

My friends have the last name Isla. When I first met them I thought it was Ees-la, but soon found out it was pronounced Is - La - exactly the way it is spelled. Now when I see the word, the first thing that comes to mind is Is -la, then EEs- la.

If you are looking to name a child eye la, which is a very beautiful name, why not spell it Ayela? My husband has a friend from college and that is how she spells it. Just a thought....

Is- la. Like the word "is." And I'm an English major. Hispanics are going to pronounce is as many others have suggested: "eeees-la."

You can pronounce is any way you like, but I vote for my way, unless you're Hispanic.

I do know how to pronounce it and it is becoming a much more popular name so you will probably find a lot of people who do, but I don't think the majority of people are going to know how to say it. And where you live will make a big difference how they pronounce it as well. If you are in an area like Boston with a lot of Irish it is going to be a lot different than in the southwest with hispanic influence, or the south, where they don't see names like that very often. I love the name by the way, I think it is beautiful. I named my son Ian, not realizing this is a difficult name for people to pronounce. I thought 3 letters couldn't possibly be that hard to figure out. *sigh*

We've been considering this name as well. :) It is my husband's favorite. I had the same concerns about pronunciation and was also told last night it is becoming very popular. :(

I mispronounced it when he first introduced it to me. He had to tell me it was short for Island. We may use it as a middle name.

I would say Ees-la. I'm showing my age but I automatically think of the Madonna song La Isla Bonita.

Good luck,
K.
