Is Vomitting a Sign of Food Allergies

My 11 month old unexpectedly started violently vomiting after eating watermelon last Friday. It was about 20 minutes after consuming a lot of watermelon. So I'm just curious if anyone has heard of vomiting as a sign of a food allergy. The only reason I am asking is because the 1st time I gave him watermelon I thought it was odd that he woke up from his nap really congested. But blew it off as possibly having a cold..that started about a wk ago. He still has a clear running nose (is also teething is top teeth too tho?) I thought twice about giving him the watermelon this just past Friday, but went ahead anyway. Within 20 minutes he was throwing it all back up. The poor baby was sick all night, but woke up the next morning fine? I don't know if its just a coincidence or if its something I should avoid for awhile.

He did just have an allergy test ordered at his 9mth appt., not because I was worried about him having any symptoms. But the pediatrician said that based off of my SIL's history (severe allergie and asthmatic reactions to cats) and my hubby's childhood history to asthma induced pneumonia, and the one case of Broncholiotis he had at 6 mths he said he doesn't doubt allergies/asthma will become a problem in the future...And said he wanted to go ahead and run the blood test now and see if there is anything to worry about....I was just going to wait until his 12 month check up to go over the results, b/c I didn't have any reason to be totally worried about it. But now wondering if maybe I should make an appt to go over the results?? But don't want to get overly hyped up if maybe the melon didn't just settle well?

Any thoughts?

What can I do next?

Yes, my son has severe allergies and if he gets something he throw up first then trouble breathing. I would get an epi-pen and his test results ASAP!
Good luck!

It can be, yes. I would wait until he's around 18 months before I would try to give it to him again...he's still pretty little for watermelon.

I have an allergy to melon, so it does exist. And vomiting can definitely be a sign of a severe allergic reaction. When someone vomits due to an allergic reaction it is because they actually have hives inside of their body----unlike getting them all over their face where you can see them. Signs of a severe allergic reaction where a child can go into anaphylactic shock may include: sneezing, wheezing, coughing, and vomiting. Please, I urge you to take your child to the doctor and an allergist asap. And if she has another episode where she starts vomiting after eating something--do not hesitate to call 911. You need to have her tested and likely have an epipen on hand at home.

I am sorry to sound so dramatic, but severe food allergies are nothing to mess with. A little boy I sit for had a severe reaction to a peanut that started with just vomiting. His parents waited to take him to the ER because they honestly didn't know better or the signs to look for and he almost died, it was a close call.

No more water melon until you are sure! I wish you the best and hope your child does not have allergies.

Toddlers will throw up even without good reason, but if there is family history of allergies then there no reason to risk it. Call the Dr and see if it's a possibility, even if it is only for your peace of mind.

Never heard of an allergy to watermelon...ever eat too much yourself? you get that full...i've drank too much water, too fast feeling. perhaps it was just that.

Having had asthma as an infant and into adulthood myself, keep his room and play areas vacuumed, dusted and free of any extra carpets, stuffed animals and anything else that collect dust. even laughing real hard will induce an attack at times. hopefully he doesnt have any of it. good luck and schedule that appt soon, dont wait

Perhaps he just ate too much and couldn't handle it all. My daughter is allergic to Mangos and she just gets a rash all over her face. I would try again but just give him a little bit and see what happens. I never took my duaghter to the doctor for the rash we just avoid mangos like the plague. Good Luck!

Typically true food allergies start with itching, redness, & hives - skin symptoms. There is commonly a stomach dump, but that's usually in the form of diarrhea. Vomiting after eating the watermelon sounds more like a food sensitivity, like lactose intolerance, than a true food allergy. Small distinction, but very important since food allergy can lead to anaphylactic shock and food sensitivity just makes you feel really lousy.
Go ahead and call for the blood test results, it will make you feel better.

You can get the results now. Just call the doctor's office and ask for them. You can also ask to talk with his advice nurse and ask her/him about the water melon.

I have food allergies and they run in my family. My granddaughter, who was diagnosed when she was just a couple of months old, has food allergies. I've not known of any of us vomiting in response to the allergies. My granddaughter couldn't keep her formula down but it came back up immediately. I've also not heard of anyone being allergic to watermelon or of a test for a watermelon allergy. That's not to say that he isn't allergic. He could be. I'd talk with the doctor. You don't need an appointment to do that.

I suggest that it's more likely that his digestive system isn't mature enough to be able to handle digesting watermelon yet and that you wait until he's older to try again. I think it's also possible that he ate too much since he loves it and it's not a filling food. Sounds like he has several things going on at the same time and the watermelon could just be a co-incidence.

Definitely talk with his doctors office about this and the allergy test.
