Is This Typical with Flu Shot?

My son got his second half of his flu shot this afternoon and now has a 102 temp (about 5 hours later). Is this typical? I'm pretty sure he didn't do this with the first.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We ended up having to go to the after hours clinic because it went above 104 on Saturday. It ends up that it's something viral, and he was actually getting it before his shot. He's been coughing a little with a runny nose all week, but we just assumed it was teething. Thank you all for your help.

I think it is more common than most doctors would like you to believe. My husband has only had the flu twice in his 32 years, but both times was right after having the flu shot. I would suggest speaking to your doctor as soon as possible. If his temp goes up quickly to 104 or higher, I would take him to the ER. If he got the flu from the shot, they have an anti-viral that can make him feel better much faster. However, it has to be started 24-48 hours after symptoms of the flu arrise. Good luck to you and I hope it is just a minor reaction.

I always gave my children Tylenol about 15 minutes before the shot to avoid this kind of reaction. Ask your pediatrician if you can do the same in the future.

Fevers are common after vaccinations. 102 is high and I would call your dr. after 24 hours. Do whatever you can to bring the fever down and if it gets any higher, go to the er.

This happened to my daughter last month when she got the first dose of the flu shot. She had a high temp of 101 and was generally achy and fussy for a few days. The temp stuck around for the first 48 hours but then went away. I called my pedi and he said that it's a common reaction to the flu shot and to administer tylenol to control the fever and to drink plenty of fluids. It was a royal pain that the flu shot gave her these symptoms so we decided not to get the second dose. My opinion is that the flu shot is great if it helps PREVENT but in her case, it didn't. Good luck to you and I feel for you and him for going through this.

Same here - the only time my daughter has gotten the flu has been after the doctor has told me that she HAS to get a flu shot! :o( But I would keep an eye on her temp for sure and just like the other mom said u might have to take her to the ER if it goes 103 and higher. I have had a lot of health issuses with my daughter and fevers and this is what I have been told to do: put her in either just a diaper with a sheet or if is coolder just a light shirt with a sheet so she doesn't get to warm. BUT if she starts to shiver put something a tad warmer on her as shivering is the bodies way of raising its temp so you will actually make it go up rather than down. :o) This is pretty normal though but just give her the kids motrin (this is what the dr and hospital recommeded for me as it last longer hour wise so need to give it less and has actually been more effective)and then just keep an eye on it. Best wishes! I am sure she will be back to normal soon! :o)
