Is This Reflux Again?

Hi. My daughter had silent reflux as a baby in response to food allergies. She's now 2.5 and while avoiding dairy and beef has been easy, avoiding corn has proven difficult and she's responded mostly with night waking and daytime fits, but we haven't known if they were reflux related or not (we haven't seen any specific reflux signs since she was one, and she's been off of reflux meds since 1.5). A few weeks ago, I tried a new food for her that was supposed to be corn free and she started waking at night screaming hysterically, didn't want to be picked up, and the only thing that calmed her was giving her juice. Obviously, I don't like giving her juice at night, but she was very insistent. She'd suck it down until it was completely empty, then she was calm. I found another mom who had given her corn allergic daughter the same thing and also reacted, so we figured it was a corn problem with processing or cross-contamination (not unusual...one of the reasons it's so tough to avoid corn). She's started waking again in the last few nights, crying for juice. (She's not been a consistent night sleeper because of her allergies, but usually just needs a cuddle, not anything to drink, so this is unusual). I'll look at her diet to see if corn snuck in again, but has anyone else with a kid with reflux ever had this happen? When I ask her if anything hurts, she says, "no, just thirsty" but there is obviously something else going on. She saw a GI doc when she was little, but they aren't going to be able to tell anything without an upper GI, and I don't want to put her through that if we don't have to , but I'm worried that she's had reflux all this time and it could be damaging her esophagus. We've had the head of her bed raised again since the first time this happened. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I have to agree that if she is drinking juice, it is probably not reflux. My nephew also went through the GI tests when he was little and it really was no big deal. Have you concidered that she might just be having nightmares? This is a common age for them to start and the juice just might be her source of comfort. If you think that might be it, beware of the movies and TV that she watches. My oldest had a couple of movies that she loved to watch and was not scared while watching them but then she would wake up that night with nightmares.

Aloe vera juice is very soothing to the thoat, esophagus, stomach, intestines. If you suspect she is suffering from reflux again, try giving her 2 oz. of aloe vera juice before she goes to bed. The kind I give my kids is Ultimate Aloe Vera Juice that comes in Strawberry/Kiwi, Cranberry, or Pomegranite. I have used this brand for over 5 yrs. I keep it on hand in case of soar throats, upset stomaches or just to drink sparingly. It's very concentrate, but tastes great. When my son was an infant on a few occasions he would wake up crying in pain with what seemed like a belly ache and I would give him aloe vera juice. It always helped very quickly. Aloe vera juice also acts like a laxative, that's why I recommend only 2oz. The product is not found in stores but can be bought online at www.marketamerica.com/2bewell Please let me know if you have any questions.
Best,
V.

Instead of juice couldn't you offer her cold water instead...you don't want that sugar sitting in her mouth over night, and having her brush her teeth after she has already been tucked in seems a tad silly. Also it would do no harm to leave a sippy cup of water near her bed so she could get it herself at age 2 and a half...unless its a nightmare or illness waking nightly at her age isn't a habit you want to encourage. Then again I have no experience with reflux, if you think it is er reflux acting up maybe you should speak to her ped about some kind of medication?
Lots of luck

Having a severe refluxer myself with FA's to everything under the sun, I don't think that's what it is. Yes, the night waking could attribute to some of that (in which case I'd give her some Mylanta Cherry Supreme to see if that would help calm her down- the juice will only add fuel to the fire since it's so acidic).

I'd do an elimination diet and keep her foods pretty bland and boring for the next few days to see if that improves things any. Then add your suspect foods back in one at a time and watch for her reactions.

Ellie just went through a milk trial a week and a half ago (can you spell "disaster"?!) so I feel your pain. We are avoiding: milk, soy, corn, rice, wheat, oats, pitted fruits, and meat. I more than feel your pain, sister!

As far as the Upper GI goes, it's the least invasive test there is. All they do it have them drink barium and then x-ray it going down and see if it's refluxed at all (a total of 5 minutes MAYBE). It's not bad at all. :) Ellie has had the UGI, Upper Endoscopy, Flex sigmoidoscopy, Rectal suction biopsy, multiple stomach x-rays, etc. etc. So really! Don't worry about the UGI if that's what they want to do!

Keep your head up!

My son who is 2 is waking up at night as well right now or just being hard to get to sleep. He goes to bed with a sippy cup of ice water. The last three nights he has drank down the water that was in his cup. I have had to give him more water. I do not know if it is from playing outside more or if it is from the weather changing to warmer temps. When it gets to 70 degrees outside I have to turn my air on because the house gets too hot for me to sleep and I can not have the windows open due to allergies. So maybe she is just thirsty like my son is.

C.,
My son is 13 months and has reflux and is on medication. He is also lactose intollerant. He also ocassionally has the horrible screaming during the night. It does not happen very often anymore, but still does happen about once a week or so. I had not thought of this being related to reflux. It seems for my son it is about comfort and getting some milk (lactose free milk of course). He does not get milk during the night except on those nights that he wakes up screaming and comforting him does not seem to do it.

My husband and I separated about four months ago and it happens most often the first night home from spending an overnight with his dad. So, not sure if a major part of this is stress related. He did, however, do this before we separated, but just not as bad as he does now.

How did you figure out about the corn allergy?

Does your daugthter wake up screaming almost like she is having a night terror?
