Is This Normal? - Conroe, TX

My 1 year old daughter just had her first major sickness. She had a really bad virus and was sick with terrible cough and congestion for 2 weeks. She was sleeping through the night before this with occasional waking. Now that she is well she is waking every 2 hours with terrible screams and I can not quiet her back down. I tried everything including crying it out but she just threw up in her crib. The only other thing I could think is that she is being transitioned off of soy formula that she had to drink due to a metabolic disorder. She has been cleared by her doctors to add milk products in to her diet. we are doing this very slowly and with lots of caution.

So What Happened?

She actually did much better last night! Not great but better. I decided to keep her on the soy formula for now and think it may be the culprit for her screaming like she is in pain! She did have a well check a few days after she was over her illness and no ear infection then. She is already in treatment for reflux and has been since 1 month. Thank you all so very much for your responses!!!!

our pedi said that at this age one pluss that they can have night terriros. Just last night our son was crying. I checked his diaper, not it. I held him, sang, and rocked while standing there. Five mins later I felt his head start to get heavy. So I layed him down and off to sleep he went. I think from time to time...not every night they need just a little extra lovin.

No, terrible screams every two hours indicates that there is something wrong. If it is the milk products, those cries could indicate stomach cramps. Another possibility is that the virus moved into her inner ears and now those are infected - which would explain why laying down is painful and her frequent wake ups and screams. Either way - get her back to the pediatrician - something is up.

It sounds like night terrors. It is also common to have sleep issues after a big illness. Give her some time to get back on track. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do for night terrors except to try to calm her down. Is she actually waking?

This should clam down soon
Good Luck!

Was she okay on the soy? My kids did the same thing at this age--I just ended up keeping them on the soy formula until the milk wasn't a problem. I'd try it every 6 months or so...finally (around age 3) they were okay with milk.

Has she been checked out for ear infections or reflux? My daughter did this also when she had a double ear infection...but we didn't know because she didn't have a fever and when she was awake she wasn't fussy until we laid her down for naps or night time. Reflux can burn when they lay down, it wouldn't hurt to have this checked out if you haven't already. I hope things get better for you soon, I know how maddening this can be.

Hi... I'm currently reading the No Cry Sleep Solution. Today was the first day I tried some of the techniques and already a huge difference. It is 2:45 am and my son normally wakes up about now but he is blissfully asleep. We achieved this sans the traumatic crying it out. Highly reccommend the book if she's still having trouble sleeping through the night once the pediatrician figures out the cause of her screams. Poor baby! Blessings!

Are you sure she doesn't have an ear infection? my kids would wake up from the pain like that. seems like every time my daughter's allergies come down, the head congestion causes her to get a ear infection. try giving her some tylenol and some ear drops that are pain relivers(they are sold over the counter and my daughter loves them)and then a trip to the doctor for an ear check.
