When I first read this my first response was to laugh......you know, one of those inappropriate times.
So, when this lady travels does she put the baby in the suitcase as well?
I'd vote for NO! it is NOT SAFE!
So I was driving to the store and I saw this lady with her baby on her back in a babybackpack. The thing that bugs me is she was riding her bike. What are your thoughts on this.
I'm surprised at the number of people that thought this was safe, but I though I might when my DH thought it was ok. Of course, I have been hit by a car while riding a bike so I think that changes my perspective.

Putting a baby in a car is also not safe. Death in auto accidents is one of the top causes of death for babies and children, but most of us put our children in cars every day.
So what is the difference if she has an accident with the baby on her back or in one of those trailer things. Either way that baby is going to be jostled around.
I ride my bike around a lot, not with a baby strapped to my back mind you, and since I reached the age of 16 I have never had an accident on my bike, most adults don't. So again how exactly is this dangerous? I would only think it was dangerous if the child had reached an age where it can shift its weight and cause an accident.
What if she was walking and was struck by a car? Sorry but I don't see this as a safety issue.
Oh goodness that makes me nervous for that mom and child. Crazy things happen in the blink of an eye.
Not considered "safe" in my book!
Honestly I don't see the problem with it at all. I think it would be ideal for the baby to be wearing a helmet, but it sounds safer than the baby seats that go on the back of the bike, or the trailers that you pull on the back of the bike. The chances of something happening to the baby are higher if you're driving in a car. Usually if you fall off your bike (which I haven't fallen off of a bike since I turned 10), you're not landing on your back.
I think it's safer then the ones attached to the bike. Most have a 5 point harness in them. Plus I would think if the bike is going down, mom would have a better shot of catching herself, in that case the child would go down while the mom was still on her feet.
I have fallen with one of those packs on, I was a hot mess. My little one safe as can be.
Does not sound safe to me, just thinking about her falling?
I realize that cars are not safe either, but we rear-face to 5, harness to 8 and booster until 12. I figure if I take all the precautions I can, well, why not. Crash forces are unforgiving.
At least the woman was exercising!
I would not do it myself, but really they have bikes with baby carriers that attach so it is probably not much different than that. and I am not talking about the low to the ground kind with its own wheels that you pull like a trailor... I am talking the old school seat that is behind the adult.
were they both wearing helmets? ;)
Perfectly safe, as long as the mama is comfortable on her bike. I've done it with every one of my kids.
In Japan, in big cities, it's a way of life. Just about every mother does it and I've never heard of anyone I know having an accident where their baby was hurt.
A baby in a backpack is totally going to throw off her center of gravity so no landing on her knees or what she "usually does" isn't going to be the same. I would think it would make her top heavy (boom!!)
Of course there are more car accidents, there are more cars in traffic. Would I risk Car vs. Baby in backpack? No way!!
Depends upon your idea of "safe" - it could be Darwin at work...sorry - this is my attempt at sarcasm.
Most baby backpacks I've seen and the one I had - had buckle harness system in it.
We don't know her situation...why she was riding a bike...etc...
Was the baby wearing a helmet?
