I would watch the IRON b/c it's very constipating. Maybe since she is eating more, cut it out, and only do a multivitamin. My Ped said that she thinks a well balanced diet is best vs. vitamin supps - if we can do it.... we still do multivitamins, but I'd watch the iron.

You DO NOT pee out all "extra vitamins" - the only one I know of is vitamin C. The others you do have to watch for overdose (toxicity), especially iron.vitamin A. If you have a question about one ask your Pedi or google the vitamin with "overdose or toxicity" and you will find lots of information.

Too much iron can cause contipation. Call the doctor's office and say "I forgot to ask the doctor, but now that Susie's color has improved, do we need to continue the iron supplement along with the vitamin that has iron?". They may say to either stop the supplement OR switch to a vitamin without iron OR may say keep doing both for a while OR maybe give the supplement every other day or so to help but not be as much.

Is there a medical reason for your daughter to take the iron supplement? I would definitely ask your pediatrician if you daughter needs the iron supplement, or if there's a vitamin that your doctor recommends for her. My kids' pediatrician recommended the gummy vitamins that you can buy at Costco (they also have some at Trader Joes) that I give to my kids every day because they are such picky eaters. I took a nutrition class last year, and I remember reading that there are only certain vitamins and minerals that get flushed out when we use the bathroom, but there are certain others that are retained by our bodies and can build up to a toxic level. I'm sure your daughter is nowhere near that level, but it would probably be a good idea to ask your pediatrician about it, and maybe do some research on your own. :-)

Absolutely. You need to be very careful with what you're putting in your child's body. Vitamins aren't government-regulated, either, so you honestly don't know for sure what's in them. Many vitamins can make people sick, esp. in high doses. Too much magnesium, for instance, can put people in a coma.

I would ask the pediatrician which supplements, if any, she should be taking. Most young kids don't need any.

Supplementing vitamins or minerals if you're already getting enough in your diet is dangerous.

All kids need iron. Boys until 18 to 20 and girls until menopausal. If you are concerned about taking iron then have her checked once per year what her iron levels are. Some men and women over the age of 60 (especially women) still take iron because their iron levels are low.

Interesting answers. I agree that the best course of action is to ask your doctor about your particular child.

Generally, though, having your child take a mutli-vitamin is a safe practice, perhaps with some benefits. Research shows that it is better to ingest our vitamins as part of natural foods and dietary habits, when possible. But the use of vitamins in children addresses the natural variations and holes in a child's diet. In this area many people are deficient in Vitamin D, for exmaple. Children who eat mostly bread and cheese can be deficient in vitamin C and iron. A simple multivitamin can help fill in the gaps. Children's multi-vitamins, including those with iron, won't even approach toxicity if the child takes an entire bottle in one day. A daily dose, even over a life time, will not approach toxicity in a healthy child. (We don't necessarily eliminate excess as waste, but we do use the vitamins up.)

I have always been told that if you take more vitamins than your body needs your body just flushes them out with your waste...you can always call the Ped's office and ask questions from the Nurse practitioner if she is Unable to answer she can ask doctor and ring you back with info...I call all the time to ask questions, it is why they are there = )
