You can substitute. The yellows cook up a little mushier so be careful not to overcook them if texture is an issue.
A neat chili recipe calls for dry brown lentils. I have yellow lentils. Can I substitute the yellow for the brown, or do their tastes vastly differ?

Not enough to notice in a chili recipe. It will be a visual difference more than anything. Enjoy - sounds like a good variation!
