Is the Photo of the Bloody Hands Really Necessary?

I admit it...I'm a bit of a prude.....

Blood doesn't normally bother me... I've held my children while they were getting stitches.... I sliced the heck out of my finger this summer (7 stitches, in the nail bed), and I dealt with my son's leg wound that kept breaking open and bleeding all over the place this summer, too..... but that photo for the blog about Halloween, with the bloody hands just grosses me out. Every time I open Mamapedia, THAT is the photo I see.

Is anyone else bothered by it?

I'm tempted to leave Mamapedia alone for a week or so and hope that it goes away.......

Hey, Jake..... can you change that photo/blog post out?

ETA: Yes, it is the Mamapedia home page. It used to be that I was always automatically logged in, but since they made the changes the last few weeks, I have to log in all the time... and when I log in, it takes me back to that home page... very annoying.

ETA again: Does anyone know how to change the settings so I'm not logged out? I went to my profile, but don't see an option for that. The previous Mamapedia platform never logged me out before... now, when I leave the page up on a tab, when I go back after several hours, I'm logged out..... very annoying.

What can I do next?

I go to the page where the questions are and then I click and copy that link. I open a new tab and paste the address in there. THEN I put that page in my bookmarks. I have it added to my bar so I can click on it any time. If it makes you sign in every time it's still not a big deal but you do go directly to the questions and nothing else.

ETA: Ok, out of curiosity I read her blog. It's a complaint, about the gore and horror that are not where you'd expect them to be (in Halloween costume stores) but in places like the pharmacies and grocery stores. She's complaining about how she can't take her son to buy juice boxes because that means they have to walk past groaning skulls, and she suggest that people ask the manager to remove the scary, bloody, horror "decorations" from the regular grocery displays. And so for her photo about toning it down, she chooses hands with blood dripping from them? I'm calling her out on this one. She should have chosen a cute pumpkin or a little kid in a simple ghost sheet with eye holes cut out. This is an awful photo to see. I'm not sure how to comment to the woman who wrote the blog but I'd like to say that she's subjecting us to the exact same thing she's complaining about.

I agree. I'm dealing with enough medical problems - I don't need to see that photo on the front page. It just seems gratuitous. I think the writer is talking about the scary sounds and scenes that abound during the Halloween season, and how you can't walk through the grocery store for eggs and milk without seeing skeletons and fake horror things (I didn't read it so I'm guessing). So why subject us to bloody hands? Take this photo off. Blur the hands.

Feedback noted! Thanks for letting us know and while we may not be able to easily swap out the picture at this late stage...knowing what the community likes...and dislikes is super helpful and gives us guidance going forward.

Regrading the login issues, these are two known bugs we are aware of and working to resolve...

- When you login you are not redirected to the page you were on but rather the homepage...
- You don't stayed logged in forever but get logged out periodically.

We hope to have these resolved shortly!

Thanks,

Jake

ETA: A day later, and still the image is there. Jake, what's the technical difficulty in simply changing a stock image?

Original:
While I'm glad Jake replied, I wonder why they can't "swap out the picture at this late stage" as he put it? Is it that technically difficult just to remove it?

I found the photo gross and surprising and feel that it was a very poor choice--and it was indeed a choice. (Not saying it was Jake's choice, just that someone at MP chose badly.) With countless Halloween stock images out there to choose from, someone selected this image--which isn't even a Halloween image, it's simply gore for gore's sake with no Halloween aspect to it. Very disappointing and I hope Jake gets it off there soon. It was the very first image that popped up when I opened the site and for a second I thought I had inadvertently been tossed onto some other site--the kind that I'd leap to get off my screen.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of Halloween to begin with. I was a surgical assistant for years, so blood doesn't bother me. But gore for the sake of entertainment does. The picture seems really unnecessary to me.

Okay, I had to go and check them out.

I love love love Halloween and Day of the Dead even more...and we are one of those houses that has the huge graveyard scene that keeps getting bigger and bigger every year in our front yard. I regularly see people stopping with cameras to shoot photos.

And even I think the bloody hands are too much for the article. Way too much for an article on the scary decorations out at Halloween. I can literally think of about 20 other images that would have worked better....but hey I am an artist.

My son has an October birthday and we would have to go to Party City in September to get his party things if he wanted to pick them out OR I would go in and name all the things via phone to my husband in the car with my son.

Hey Jake! I love actually having a moderator with a name that responds to us...woo-hoo it is about time!!! Years over due!!

I actually have no idea what you are talking about but I can assume you mean the home page.

Then bookmark your inbox and it will take you back there after you log in or just don't log out.

I saw it just now when I went to the home page vs straight to questions, and then the stupid system would not take me to the questions. Repeatedly. It's not just a little blood, it's handfuls of blood, supposedly for a story about the "horror" of shopping with children. Not something I want my child to see unless I want to be dealing with nightmares. Did whoever put that together forget we have YOUNG CHILDREN in our homes? I bet in 5 minutes I could find a better stock photo. And I don't believe it's not possible to swap out. It's gross, Jake. Take it down or change it. You can merge threads. You can edit one image file.
