Is Soy Milk Safe for Toddler Specially Boys ?

I've read in the medical journal that soy milk contains phytoestrogens, primary female sex hormones, could cause feminization of the boys reproductive system and early puberty in girls. Due to parents giving solely soy milk to babies and toddles instead of mixing it with cow's products is a new trend, there are not enough cases to follow up. But the methods of analysis are more accurate in recent years than in previous studies.
Does anybody know anything about this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I did read some more and I do think that we should just be careful more in what we give our kids instead to just "go" with the latest trend. I have met newly parents who took the decision not to vaccinate theirs kids, moms who are determined to raise their young children vegan, or families that eat row meats...... For what I've read, I think that I should start thinking about soy milk , me and menopause....

You seem to have done more research than I have. I know there is a lot of contradictory information out there. Some say it's perfectly fine. Some say it's not fine. This website was very enlightening http://www.healingdaily.com/detoxification-diet/soy.htm I was amazed that they wrote that a baby getting soy formula would be getting female hormones equivalent to about 5 birth control pills a day.

I wouldn't give soy to my son. How many asians (who eat a lot of soy) can grow a beard? Something wrong with that. (My son's not asian btw. But asians don't have facial hair which is very strange to me. Makes me think it's due to the soy in their diet which has perhaps even altered their genes).

From what I've read, soy is great for a menopausal woman. But not so great for a developing boy. As for the Asian thing, as far as I experienced, the Japanese don't drink soy milk. They eat tofu, they eat edamame (maybe 3 or 4 pods as a snack, NOT a bowlful like Americans), and *fermented* soy products. I grew up in Japan and never even HEARD of soy milk until coming to the States. It's a myth that the Japanese eat "a lot" of soy. They don't. They might eat a small piece of tofu or a few edamame pods in one sitting as part of a vast and diverse low fat, healthy diet that includes lots of vegetables and fish (in fact, edamame are like the junk food of the Japanese diet). Here in the US, the side dish that comes with California Pizza Kitchen's kids' mac and cheese is an enormous bowlful of edamame, enough to feed an entire Japanese family! And so it goes with soy milk - one small cupful every couple of days probably won't harm you. But unfortunately we're encouraged to substitute it for milk and drink glass after glass. "Look at the Japanese! They're soooo healthy! They eat tons and tons of soy!!!" It's simply not true. Don't fall for it. If you need a cow's milk substitute, try goat's milk instead. At the very least, switch to organic cow's milk. And try to buy products that don't list soy as one of the ingredients (which is a very difficult thing to do these days!)

Soy milk is not healthy. It is highly artificially engineered. It's fine to drink sometimes in a pinch, but does NOT replace the vital brain developing fats in milk. Tofu and edamame are healthy natural soy bean foods (but not milk replacements), but soy milk is not very healthy.
If you are vegan or dealing with dairy intolerance, be very careful to replace all the the things your toddler will be missing with milk. Soy milk does not have them.

When I read about this, soy formula seemed to be the worst culprit..but it freaked me out enough to stop giving my son soy milk (and the fake meat soy products). It is not just soy milk, but soy in general, which is scary considering it has sneaked its way into most of our food supply. Mayo has soybean oil, for example....so it is in places you would not expect. Neither my son or I can tolerate cow's milk so we drank soy. After reading about this, I switched to Almond milk about a year and 1/2 ago. It is delicicious. However, last week I was reading about carrageenan in Almond milk and how too much is also a bad thing..so now I am at a loss. I am trying to find somewhere to buy organic Almond milk. I personally don't like rice milk but your son may. Good luck.

I have read all the articles and the conclusion I came to was that as long as soy is fermented then it is safe. That would not be the soy milk case. Is it worse than other things?... maybe not, but we have to deal with what we know. If you are looking at an alternative to cow's milk, look to goat's milk. It is more like human breast milk than any of the other alternatives and it doesn't have the added sugar to make it taste like a milkshake, lol.

Meyenburg brand that is in the refrigerator case at the grocery store tastes good. The powdered and evaporated (just like cow's milk) is awful tasting. If you're looking for a formula, PM me and I can tell you what my niece used.

God bless,
M.

Soy has been given a bad rap it doesn't deserve. The phytoestrogens in it are not the same as those in plastics. Women with breast cancer have been scared off it but studies are now shown that it increases survival rates or at least does not reduce survival rates. Here's one:
Soy Food Intake and Breast Cancer Survival

I also have a very long article written by by Dixie Mills, MD
Here is an excerpt:

"We’ve wondered for a long time why there are still people who question the safety of soy foods and supplements. We’ve used soy at the clinic for 10 years to help relieve menopausal symptoms, and we’ve reviewed all of the myths about it — that soy causes breast cancer, interferes with tamoxifen or the digestion of protein, causes developmental delays in infants fed soy formula, and many others. In our experience, and in countless studies we’ve looked at, we’ve found nothing to support these myths."
