Is Nail Polish Harmful for a 23 Month Old?

While painting my own toe nails, my 23 month old son asked for his toe nails to be 'coloured too'. I lightly painted two or three of his nails and wiped it off before drying. This left behind a small amount of smudged nail polish. My son went to his fathers for a week and when i picked up my son, dad wrote in the communication book about the nail polish. He said that our son shouldn't be wearing it or even around it because its a chemical and is dangerous. I didn't think it was a big deal as its water based and it was only a little bit on his toes. Am i wrong for painting his toe nails? Is water based nail polish harmful to him?

What can I do next?

I can't believe that. I used to paint a toe or 2 when on my son when I was doing my own nails. Now, my son is 3 1/2 and not that into it. My MIL watches him and has painted his toes too. I actually didn't like it once when she did his all red. I felt like she did it to bug me. haha

Um, no.
It's no more harmful to him than it is to you, and I'm guessing you're just fine!

This is probably his dad objecting to the nails being painted at all.

PS: My 3.5 yr old DS insists that I paint his anytime I do mine. And I do.

I'm one of those all-natural, non-chemical girls so I was very interested to hear about water-based nail polish! I have formaldahyde-free polish that I use on rare occasions, but hadn't heard of this, so thanks -- I just googled it! You could write a short and nice note in the communication book about the polish you used, but I do think this was probably dad not wanting his son's toes painted.

Well if it's bad for them then my daughter somehow has survived it. She has been going with my to get my nails done since she was about 10 months old. I would dip her feet in with mine for pedicures after it had cooled off. She's 8 now and still LOVES to go.

I never painted my sons nails though. And my husband wouldn't appreciate it if I did. But if you're going to do it, I'd make sure there are no signs of it before he goes to see dad.

Hayley,

There are some safe polishes out there but most are toxic. There are lots of chemicals running through your home also. Most mothers and fathers are not aware of the environmental impact on our health today due to chemicals. There are solutions to making it better for those interested. It is good that you are asking that is how you start to make a difference.

Happy New Year.

The dad overracted. The polish on his nails for that brief period of time is not going to harm him nor will being around it be harmful to him. I agree w/the other comments; it's probably more about the fact that he does not want his son's nails painted.
