Is My Son Showing Signs of Autism?

My son just turned 16 months and recently has started having a facial tick of some sort. He'll be playing or eating, and then all of a sudden go blank and blink so hard that he nods his head 5-6 times. I am not anti-immunization, but this did all start shortly after his 15 month check up and the dreaded MMR vaccine. I asked our pediatrician to split the vaccine up, and he said he was unable to do so. After looking some online (the internet is a blessing and a curse), I've read that walking on tip toes could be a sign of autism as well, and he's done that some this month. His speech seems to continue to grow, but he's developed that tick. I've put a call into the pediatrician and am waiting their return call, but really wanted to hear from other moms out there. I want to be proactive with whatever this is. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Hi ~
what you are describing sounds like possible seizures. I would talk to your pediatrician right away about what your son is doing.

toe walking can be normal as long as the child goes in and out of the position. continuous toe walking, toe walking across the room, etc is not normal. more than typical toe walking can be sign of sensory processing difficulties or tight leg muscles. But again toe walking in and of itself does not mean autism or sensory processing - there are many other reasons why a child toe walks. If toe walking continues for a while/increases you may want to consider a physical therapy evaluation.

Good luck! Aurora

Sometimes my son nods his head a couple of times, repetitively and randomly. He also walks on his tip toes, and is three and does not speak. He IS autistic.

I feel like my son was BORN with autism, but I do have a friend or two who do claim their children's lives were drastically changed by that shot, so it's not out of the ordinary to hear it. Things you'll need to watch for are decreased eye contact, spinning, fixations with things like ceiling fans or wheels, and "stimming" which is commonly arm flapping. Any of this starts, IMMEDIATELY take him to a doctor who can diagnose whatever problem he does have. And honestly, I would take him to a doctor just to be sure. If they give you the cold shoulder, don't stop. Continue to be proactive. A mother's gut instincts are usually right, and even if it isn't autism, none of the things you are describing are common behaviors for children.

While you are at it, read the book "Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies" by Kenneth Bock, MD. Very awesome book. A must for proactive parents.

Feel free to email me anytime. I love autistic children, and would be more than happy to talk to you more about your son and your concerns with him. Best of luck.

Wow M.,
What a hard thing to be facing right now. I wanted to send you a link to a friend's website. You should read her story, it's quite amazing. She's a research guru and when her son started having problems, she went to town doing all the research she could. It's quite amazing all of the things she's discovered. I wanted to share this with you b/c she has been able to reverse signs of autism in her son...I'll leave that to you to read about, but I know you don't know me or my friend, but she's one of those friends with whom I'd trust my life. I hope this helps and is an encouragement to you.
