Is My Son Ready for a Big Boy Bed?

My son is 20 months and he is very big. 29 lbs, and 34 1/2 inches. It is getting harder and harder to lay him down into his bed. Have any other moms started to put their babies into toddler beds this young?

Oh, and he doesn't try to get out of the crib, and sleeps on a cot just fine at school!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I went ahead and got him one of the cheap toddler beds with Cars stickers on it, and he loved it. He slept 2 night in it so far, and he is doing great! He even knew to get out of bed and come into our room when he woke up! Thank you all for your advice and sharing your experiences with me. It made it easier for me to transition!

Hi D.,
I believe your big boy is ready. We had to basically skip the toddler bed, cause once he got to sleep in big brothers double bed that was it. My son was a big boy too, who has now evened out and is just at normal size. he was a diabetes baby, 10 lbs. So the toddler bed was uncomfortable for him. He was out by 18 months. Just teach him to stay in the bed til you are ready for him to get out.

Both of my boys were 20 mos. when we moved them to the "big boy" bed. Actually, we skipped the toddler bed altogether and went straight for the twin beds. Both boys LOVED the transition.

My first three kids are 24 months apart each, so it was my goal to have them out of the crib by about 20 months so it could be put away and they wouldn't feel that it was their bed anymore by the time we put the new baby in it. My first step was to put the railing down ALL the way to the floor. I taught them to climb in and out, and then taught them NOT to climb out but to call for me and wait till I came and got them out. (They were allowed to climb in and out all they wanted during playtime.) Then, not being able to afford separate toddler beds, the next step was a twin mattress on the floor until I felt sure they wouldn't roll out. (None ever did.) It sounds to me like your son would do just fine in a toddler bed.

Both mine were about 16-17 months when they moved to the toddler bed. The first because it was necessary (his sister was on her way!) and the second, just because she was ready.

Enjoy!

My son was about your son's age when I transitioned him to a big boy bed. I gave away his crib on Craigslist and his "gammy" bought him a captain's bed. He's 2 1/2 now (and sleeps pretty wild), so every night I put two pillows on the outside of his bed, and he sleeps between the wall and the pillows. He's never rolled off!

Dear D.,
If you think your son is ready for a big boy bed, I believe you should try it! You are asking for advice, so that shows you are open to new ideas yet you keep your child's safety as your utmost concern. If it makes putting your son to bed easier, I would say go for it! Also, at nap & bed time you can sit beside him and talk to him, read, or sing to him in comfort. When I was younger raising my 4 stair-stepped children 5,4,3, & 10 months old; beds were a luxury. Several of them slept together!
I know whatever you decide will be fine for your child!
Trust your instincts!
LOL in JESUS,
Sheryl
