Is My Hair Unhealthy Because of the Water Quality??

My hair is awful. It is frizzy and dry. It has been for several years. I have tried so, so many things such as: taking vitamins, staying healthy, trying expensive shampoos/hair products and cheap ones. Leave in conditioner,Wen products, new hair brushes, good quality hair dryers, no hair drying, salon advice--should I go on?
I finally noticed that when I travel out of state to visit family and such, I DO NOT have this problem nearly as much. Even when I wash my hair in the shower at the gym with no conditioner at all, it is much smoother. So, is it my water? I live in Richardson. Does anyone else have this issue? Maybe I should call a plumber and get some sort of filter or water softener. Any help would be appreciated! I've almost accepted frizzy hair--who has time for all this hassle, you know?

What can I do next?

Do you wash your hair every day? If so, don't. Try going a few days between washings. I know it sounds gross, but it is totally worth it. I did it in college and my hair became so healthy. I try to go two days without washing my hair now. Of course it's different if you work out, but it does help. Also, the kind of water does help. Try rinsing your hair with cool spring water after you shower, it will help, too.

I live close to you, and I've never noticed my hair being better during travels. Do you dye your hair often? Do you wash your hair every day? You could be prohibiting your hair from producing natural oils. Washing my hair to frequently (or using too much), really dries out my hair. Also, all the products you've been using could be the culprit. Using hot water can also dry your hair out and make it brittle. You could have a buildup, (too many products can cause a buildup of wax, also) and need to "strip" impurities from your hair. I like to put baking soda in a little water, to make a paste. Run that through your hair and let it sit a while. Rinse really well, then shampoo and condition normally, but with cold water.

A water softener will help. In the mean time rinse your hair with apple cider vinegar to help remove the mineral buildup.

I would say to go buy distilled water at the grocery store and rinse with it. If it makes a difference, then it's your water. If not, it could be a number of other things... environment/air quality/humidity when you dry your hair, product, etc...

I live in Richardson and have the opposite problem. When I travel, I hate washing my hair.

However, I do have wavy, salt and pepper hair. I use a chi turbo straightener on my hair and only wash it about every 4 - 5 days. The chi has made my life so much easier to deal with. Perhaps it also has to do with the way your hair is cut. I STRONGLY recommend Myoung at JC Penneys in Collin Creek Mall. She is WONDERFUL. After an awful hair cut from someone else, she saved my sanity. She has been cutting it for 2 years now. Tell her that I sent you and we will both get a discount. You can see a couple of pictures of me on my website on the Childbirth Classes page. : )

You may have very hard water and it could be leaving mineral deposits on your hair and building up? Have you tried a clarifying shampoo or Dawn dish soap really gets that out too. I grew up with a well & very hard water.

My hairdresser and I were just talking about this last week! She and I swear that when we travel to certain places, Chicago, IL being one of them, our hair cooperates better and looks more shiny/manageable than it does at home. We are using the same hair products we use at home, so our conclusion was the water. I do know the places I visit have much harder water than I do at home, and my hair looks better in the hard water! (sounds like the opposite for you) You may be on to something, but I am no expert!
